Why Tails Should NEVER Get His Own Sonic the Hedgehog Spinoff Movie
Although Paramount is planning to broaden the cinematic universe of Sonic the Hedgehog, I’m not entirely convinced that a single character can sustain their own spinoff. Since the release of the first Sonic film in 2020, the movie series has effectively introduced numerous video game characters into the screen within the Sonic the Hedgehog trilogy. The Sonic films often receive acclaim for transforming the rich video game history into movies, showcasing characters ranging from Sonic’s friends to his adversaries, with Shadow the Hedgehog being the most recent example. By adapting one of the much-loved backstories, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 served as a testament to the power of Sonic’s characters.
It goes without saying that there are numerous potential directions for the “Sonic the Hedgehog” series. There’s still plenty of Green Hill to delve into, and with a wealth of characters from the games and past series at our disposal, new movies and TV shows can effortlessly incorporate them. The news of upcoming spinoff tales from the production company has sparked curiosity and anticipation about their main character. However, among all of Sonic’s friends, one character in particular hasn’t been in the spotlight, and despite my fondness for all his pals, I hope Tails doesn’t receive a standalone spinoff project.
Most Sonic Characters Could Carry Their Own Spinoffs
Paramount Is Expanding Its Sega Cinematic Universe
According to a report from ComicBook, Paramount Pictures is planning to extend its cinematic universe by creating spinoffs centered around popular Sega characters. The studio has already enjoyed success with the Sonic the Hedgehog trilogy and the positive reception towards the latest Sonic film’s portrayal of Shadow’s backstory increases the excitement for more tales. Critics and audiences have been impressed with how filmmakers chose and presented characters in the Sonic films, so it would be exciting to see any Sonic character star in their own spinoff.
Sonic Video Game Character | Appearances |
---|---|
Sonic the Hedgehog | Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Knuckles, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 |
Longclaw | Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 |
Miles “Tails” Prower | Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Knuckles, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 |
Dr. Ivo “Eggman” Robotnik | Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 |
Knuckles the Echidna | Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Knuckles, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 |
Pachacamac | Sonic the Hedgehog, Knuckles |
Shadow the Hedgehog | Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 |
Dr. Gerald Robotnik | Sonic the Hedgehog 3 |
Maria | Sonic the Hedgehog 3 |
The buzz points towards a potential standalone story focusing on Shadow the Hedgehog, given his recent appearances in Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and the post-credits scene hint. The Sonic franchise offers an array of intriguing characters, each capable of driving a compelling narrative without Sonic. Besides Shadow, Amy Rose and Tails appear to be strong contenders for a spinoff. Interestingly, Dr. Robotnik could also be a viable choice. However, it seems that Tails might be the least likely character to headline a spinoff production.
Tails Shouldn’t Get His Own Spinoff Story
Tails Is A Secondary Character In The Sonic Universe
In the Sega universe, Tails remains a cherished character, but his role has primarily been that of a sidekick rather than a leading hero. His actions and decisions are largely influenced by Sonic’s behavior, making it challenging for him to carry his own story independently. This is evident when we look at Tails outside the context of Team Sonic, as seen in the Paramount+ series focused on Knuckles.
Despite Knuckles having a slightly stronger focus than Tails, the fact that his series received poor reviews implies that Tails might not be intriguing enough on his own for a standalone spinoff. Essentially, any character selected for a spinoff should possess the charisma to attract viewers, and the spinoff should offer a continuation of their story that feels significant and worthwhile.
A Tails Spinoff Wouldn’t Work Without Sonic
Sonic Would Likely Be The Center Of A Tails Story
Creating a standalone series for Tails poses a significant hurdle for the studio, as it’s tricky to imagine how they could pull off success – in terms of audience appeal and plot – without involving Sonic. This is especially true since Tails is closely tied to the franchise’s main character, making it likely that Sonic would be the one steering any interaction between them. Essentially, Sonic’s strong presence and commanding screen presence could overshadow Tails, thus making it challenging to craft an independent narrative for him.
Essentially, Tails’ solo stories often revolve around him proving his independence and equality to Sonic, even though they are enjoyable tales. Additionally, it’s worth noting that Tails’ gameplay in the Sonic series is slower and more focused on exploration, like in Tails Adventure. To make a successful spinoff for this beloved character, it would be beneficial to create a plotline that clearly defines his unique objectives beyond Sonic the Hedgehog.
