Why Superman’s Credits Scenes Break the Mold and How Thor’s MCU Exit Influences Gunn’s Approach

Major spoilers for DC’s Superman lie ahead so, with that knowledge, read on at your own discretion.

James Gunn’s Superman has made its way to the big screen, and after watching it myself, I can confidently say that the writer/director poured a great deal of effort into this movie. It’s packed with exciting moments inspired by comic books and numerous well-crafted character interactions. As you might anticipate, given that it’s the first film in DCU Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters, there are indeed credits scenes. However, they depart slightly from the typical post-credit sequences we usually see in superhero films. Gunn has his motives for this, and it seems Chris Hemsworth’s Thor might be part of the equation.

Prior to assuming the role of co-CEO at DC Studios, James Gunn had a significant career within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, where he created the “Guardians of the Galaxy” trilogy and served as executive producer for both “Avengers: Infinity War” and “Endgame”. The MCU is renowned for its mid and post-credits scenes that usually serve to introduce future projects. However, according to Gunn’s remarks to EW, it appears he wanted to steer clear of this practice with his initial DC Universe film.

My take on post-credits sequences often reflects lessons learned from my experiences with Marvel, albeit indirectly.

Superman Review: How To Launch A Superhero Franchise In 2025

In contrast to many credit scenes found in Marvel Cinematic Universe films (available on Disney+), those from the Superman series offer a different tone. During the mid-credits scene, the Man of Steel is depicted sitting on the moon, cradling Krypto while gazing at Earth. This fleeting yet significant moment subtly references a scene from the comic book “All-Star Superman”. The post-credits scene showcases Superman and Mr. Terrific engaging in a lighthearted conversation about a Metropolis building affected by the black hole that Lex Luthor had created.

In those tags, it appeared that James Gunn prioritized touching and amusing the audience over intricate world-building. His primary reason for this approach, as he stated, stemmed from the climax of “Avengers: Endgame,” where Thor’s character underwent a significant transformation by joining the Guardians of the Galaxy. Initially, fans speculated that Chris Hemsworth’s Thor might join the Guardians in “Vol. 3,” but Gunn dismissed such ideas.

In my script remarks, I expressed: “I won’t include him. I’m not keen on having Thor among the Guardians. I’m hesitant about making a movie featuring Thor. To be honest, I find the character somewhat puzzling. Despite enjoying his films and admiring Chris Hemsworth as an actor, I struggle to grasp how to portray that character effectively.

In the grand scheme of things, our team’s involvement in the resolution of that scenario was limited and came about during Marvel Studios’ “Love and Thunder,” released in 2022. As we bid farewell to the Asgardian Avenger from our crew, James Gunn shared his discontent with a specific credit scene from “Guardians Vol. 2” that had introduced the character of Adam Warlock. However, he found a way to seamlessly incorporate Warlock into “Vol. 3,” ensuring a coherent narrative for all of us fans to enjoy.

In my understanding, James Gunn’s approach to the Superman credits-scenes in the DCU suggests that these end tags won’t be solely used as a means to set up future events. While it’s possible some may still serve this purpose, it seems Gunn wants to avoid committing to specific plotlines. This open-endedness feels promising, hinting at diverse and unpredictable closing scenes in the upcoming films of this franchise.

Don’t miss out on “Superman,” one of the most anticipated movies in 2025, which is now showing in cinemas across the country. And if you want to catch up on the post-credit scenes from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, simply stream their films (and series) on Disney+.
