Why Superman: The Animated Series is the Man of Steel’s best TV show

Why Superman: The Animated Series is the Man of Steel's best TV show

As a gamer who’s been around the block more times than I care to remember, I’ve seen my fair share of Superman adaptations. From the black and white days of TV to the sleek, modern screens, there’s always been a Superman story for every era. But if you ask me to pick the cream of the crop, well, it’s got to be none other than Superman: The Animated Series.

Among the numerous outstanding Superman television series that have graced our screens, ranging from the timeless ’50s show to the critically-acclaimed current “Superman and Lois,” there’s a Superman tale for every age group. However, one particular series truly outshines the rest as my all-time favorite.

“Superman: Animated Series” stands out as the finest Superman television production ever made. Its animation is crisp and energetic, featuring stunning backdrops and well-designed characters. The ensemble boasts some of Superman’s timeless allies and adversaries, such as Lois Lane, Lex Luthor, Livewire, and Lobo. However, what truly sets it apart could be its depiction of the titular character.

Superman continues to amaze us just as much, with his timeless persona encompassing both Superman and Clark Kent. While Clark Kent is frequently underestimated in modern portrayals of Superman, he plays a crucial role that often surpasses the Man of Steel’s action sequences. This dual identity is brilliantly depicted in “Superman: The Animated Series,” such as in the episode “The Late Mr. Kent,” which underscores the significance of Clark and how Superman would be nothing without him.

It’s not just the heroes that stand out either, as the villains are plentiful; Lex Luthor, Darkseid, Lobo, Metallo, and Livewire all have amazing episodes, alongside smaller villains, some of whom only make one appearance, but make it memorable nonetheless.

As a gamer, I’d say one of the standout aspects of “Superman: The Animated Series” is its compassionate core. Superman consistently demonstrates a deep understanding and empathy for his adversaries, even the most hardened villains. However, there are exceptions like Darkseid and Brainiac, who are ruthless conquerors. Yet, characters such as Livewire and Bizarro, who grapple with their inner turmoil just as much as they clash with Superman, are never coldly defeated. Instead, they’re treated by Superman with a sense of humanity, acknowledging them not just as enemies, but as individuals.

As a gaming enthusiast diving into the world of animated series, I’ve found an endless supply of laughter and excitement in the classic animated Superman show. Characters like Mr. Mxyzptlk and Bibbo never fail to crack me up, while Superman’s escapades take him from bustling Metropolis to far-off galaxies, Earth to Apokolips. I’ve shared adventures with a variety of characters, from Lois Lane to the Dark Knight himself in the epic crossover with The New Batman Adventures. This unique collaboration paved the way for sequels and spinoffs like Justice League, keeping the action-packed fun rolling!

Superman: The Animated Series is a worthwhile watch for anybody. The great characters, adept stories, and tight animation brings new life to Superman and his world. The Man of Steel has stolen the stage when it comes to cartoons, and that’s a conversation we should all be having more often as this classic is one of the all-time greats.
