Why Suits LA Episode 9 Is a Heartbreaking Tribute to Billy Miller and His Legacy

Alert: Spoilers for Suits LA episode 9. The final chapter of Harvey Specter’s storyline on Suits LA has concluded, and Gabriel Macht’s swan song was dedicated to Billy Miller. The spin-off from the original Suits series has had a rocky first season, but it’s showing signs of improvement with each new episode. However, some plot twists find surprisingly straightforward solutions. It’s no surprise that Gabriel Macht reprising his role as Harvey Specter (even in a limited capacity) has given Suits LA a fresh boost. Unfortunately, despite plans for more original characters from Suits to appear in future episodes, the fate of Suits LA season 2 remains uncertain.

In essence, the final episode of “Suits LA” Season 1 might double as a series finale, offering an early exit to Stephen Amell’s character, Ted Black. Ted’s complicated past, initially intended to be a series attractant, has instead muddied the plot with frequent flashbacks to 2010 New York, making the present-day events of “Suits LA” feel insignificant at times. Even Harvey Specter’s appearances in “Suits LA’s” flashbacks felt disjointed, but episode 9 finally centered on the current storyline involving the former New York closer. Despite Ted’s secrecy, “Suits LA” unveiled two significant updates about Harvey Specter in this episode.

Billy Miller Played Harvey’s Brother In Suits, Marcus

Marcus First Appeared In The Season 4 Finale Of Suits

In addition to revealing that Harvey had a son post-Suits with his wife Donna (Sarah Rafferty), the ninth episode of Suits LA also introduced Harvey’s brother, Marcus Specter (Billy Miller). Throughout the 9 seasons of Suits, Marcus made only a few appearances, but his influence on the series was profound. Harvey’s younger brother makes his debut in Suits season 4, episode 16 as a significant character in a series of flashbacks. In his initial appearance, Marcus Specter was presented as a former gambling addict who sought help from Harvey by borrowing money to start a restaurant, aiming to change his life’s trajectory.

In the television show Suits, Marcus’ scenes were mostly flashbacks, revealing aspects of his character as part of Harvey’s backstory. Yet, it’s important to note that Marcus Specter was not a flat character. Beyond the intricate relationship he shared with Harvey due to their mother’s infidelity, Marcus carried a complex narrative revolving around his struggle with cancer and questionable coping methods. Marcus made a reappearance in the present during season 6 of Suits, and subsequently had limited but impactful appearances in following seasons. His most significant moment was delivering a heart-wrenching message from their mother to Harvey in the second last episode of the series.

Miller Died In 2023 Amid A Battle With Bipolar Disease

The Actor Is Fondly Remembered For His Television Roles

Regrettably, it was confirmed that Billy Miller passed away in September 2023, during his struggle with bipolar disorder. This remarkable actor occasionally played Marcus Specter from 2015 to 2019, but he had amassed numerous other memorable roles throughout his career. Before venturing into acting, Billy Miller first gained recognition in modeling and commercial work. Eventually, Billy Miller found his major breakthrough as Richie Novak on All My Children in the mid-2000s. As soon as his tenure on the ABC soap opera concluded, he joined the cast of The Young and the Restless in 2008, portraying Billy Abbott – a well-known character that would later earn Miller three Daytime Emmy Awards.

Billy Miller’s Notable TV Roles
Title Character Year
All My Children Richie Novak 2007-2008
The Young and the Restless Billy Abbott 2008-2014
Ringer John Delario 2011-2012
General Hospital Jason Morgan/Drew Cain 2014-2019
Suits Marcus Specter 2015-2019

For approximately two decades, Miller immersed himself in the world of entertainment, contributing significantly to some of the most iconic soap operas ever produced. Despite his character having a limited role, Miller’s impact was palpable on Suits, with Marcus Specter being a cherished, imperfect character that resonated deeply with viewers and is still fondly remembered. Although Miller didn’t feature in the spinoff, Suits LA episode 9 paid tribute to the actor. The “Bat Signal” storyline in the series also provided closure for Marcus Specter during Harvey and Ted’s final discussion.

How Suits LA’s Story Referenced Miller’s Death

The Spinoff Gave Marcus A Sad But Necessary Ending

In the ninth episode of Suits LA, I found myself evading queries about my personal life throughout most of it. However, in a heartfelt moment with Ted, I shared that Marcus, who had succumbed to cancer a few years back, had his condition return and passed away. This tragic event resonated deeply with the central conflict of the episode – the murder of Ted’s brother, Eddie (Carson A. Egan). The specter of Ted’s brother in Suits LA has been a recurring theme since the pilot, but it reaches its climax in episode 9 as Harvey, Ted, and Kevin (Troy Winbush) join forces to bring John Pellegrini (Anthony Azizi), Eddie’s killer, to justice.

Despite the New York group effectively carrying out Pellegrini’s downfall in “Suits LA”, the justice obtained can never compensate for Eddie’s death, a loss that deeply torments Ted, leading Harvey to disclose Marcus’ cancer return. Both men mourn their losses differently, with their grief ebbing and flowing, and through this shared experience, they form an unique brotherly bond. Billy Miller’s portrayal of Marcus Specter may have been brief in “Suits LA” episode 9, but it significantly contributes to the show’s enduring legacy.
