In a recent interview, the creators of *Stranger Things*, Matt and Ross Duffer (known as The Duffer Brothers), explained that Season 2 was released only a year after Season 1 because Netflix wanted it available before Halloween 2017. This made Season 2 unique – the time jump within the show actually matched how much the young actors had aged. Because of longer breaks between seasons, the cast started to outgrow their characters, which has been a common criticism. Many fans think it would have been better if Netflix had stuck to a yearly release schedule for *Stranger Things*.
It seems we now know why there was a delay before a new season of the show was released. According to Variety, the creators were exhausted after making Season 2 of Stranger Things. This likely prompted Netflix to give the Duffers brothers more time to plan future seasons, even if it meant waiting longer for new episodes. Initially, the burnout after Season 2 led them to publicly state that the show would only have four seasons. But after creating Season 3 in 2019, they realized they actually needed five seasons to fully tell the story.
It’s been nine years since Stranger Things first came out in 2016, and the show’s fifth and final season will jump forward in time more than ever before. This is likely because the young actors have grown up since they started the series. Season 5 will be set in the fall of 1987, over a year after the events of Season 4, which happened in March 1986. Earlier seasons took place in the summer of 1985 (Season 3), fall of 1984 (Season 2), and November 1983 (Season 1).
Stranger Things Season 5 Will Be Released in 3 Parts
To maximize excitement for the final season of *Stranger Things*, Netflix is releasing it in three parts, timed around major U.S. holidays. The first four episodes will be available on Thanksgiving (November 26th), with the next three arriving on Christmas (December 25th). The last episodes, completing the series, will premiere on New Year’s Eve (December 31st).
