Why Sean Penn didn’t attend the Oscars despite winning Best Supporting Actor

Although Stellan Skarsgård beat him at the Golden Globes, Sean Penn became the frontrunner for the Best Supporting Actor Oscar after winning at the BAFTAs and the Actor Awards. He ultimately won the award – his third Oscar – for his role in One Battle After Another.

As many predicted, Sean Penn didn’t attend the Oscars to accept his award, having also skipped the ceremony. He was also absent from both the BAFTAs and the recent Actor Awards when he won those honors.

Kieran Culkin, who won Best Supporting Actor last year, presented the award this year and accepted it for Sean Penn. He playfully noted that Penn was either unable or unwilling to attend the ceremony.

Sean Penn hasn’t publicly explained his absence from the Oscars, but sources told The New York Times he was planning a trip to Ukraine as of last week. It’s unknown what his purpose was in Ukraine, or if he still went as planned.

A spokesperson for the actor declined to comment to The New York Times for the piece.

I actually went to Ukraine last year while I was working on a documentary called Superpower. It was all about trying to understand Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s journey. It’s a bit annoying, though – if you’re in the US, you can stream it on Paramount+, but it’s not available here in the UK yet.

With this year’s Oscar victory, Sean Penn has now won three Academy Awards, adding to his previous Best Actor wins for Milk and Mystic River.

Okay, so Sean Penn just won another Oscar, and it’s a big deal! It means he’s now tied with some seriously legendary actors – Meryl Streep, Jack Nicholson, Daniel Day-Lewis, Ingrid Bergman, Frances McDormand, and Walter Brennan – for having won three Oscars for acting. It’s pretty awesome to see him up there with those names, honestly.

Katharine Hepburn won four Academy Awards throughout her acting career, for her performances in the films Morning Glory, Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner, The Lion in Winter, and On Golden Pond. No other actor has won more.
