Director Zach Cregger, in a recent statement, shared the reasons behind the replacement of Pedro Pascal in his upcoming movie titled “Weapons.
The extremely productive actor was initially chosen to star in a recently released horror movie, titled “The Night the Classroom Disappeared,” which involves 17 children from the same classroom who vanish on the same evening. This film also features Renate Reinsve from the movie “Presumed Innocent,” Tom Burke known for his role as Furiosa in the “Mad Max Saga,” and Brian Tyree Henry, a fellow Marvel Cinematic Universe actor.
Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Cregger explained why all of them were replaced by other actors.
“I had a whole different cast for this movie,” he said.
Initially, things were going smoothly in our production, but then came an unexpected pause – a strike that left us all hanging. To make matters worse, Pedro Pascal’s schedule took an unforeseen turn, causing chaos within our team. As a result, I was forced to rethink and reshuffle the entire cast for the movie.
He went on to explain: “You see, the delays caused by the strikes lead to clashes in scheduling, leaving us right back where we started.
I hold no grudges against anyone. Things just seemed to keep getting postponed, one delay leading to another. It felt as if a chain reaction was taking place. Consequently, I found myself needing to begin anew.”
In this version, I tried to maintain the original meaning while using more natural and easy-to-read language. The paraphrase conveys that there were multiple delays which led to the speaker having to start over again, and also uses a more descriptive phrase (“a chain reaction”) to describe the sequence of events.
In an exciting turn of events, I found myself stepping into the shoes once worn by Pascal in our upcoming project. Meanwhile, my esteemed colleague from our Fantastic Four: First Steps adventure, Julie Garner, replaced Reinsve. And, the talented Alden Ehrenreich and Benedict Wong joined us to continue the legacy of Burke and Henry respectively. It’s an honor to be part of such a dynamic cast!
In just about three minutes into their Zoom conversation, the director became convinced that Garner was an ideal fit for the role.
He remarked, “Her familiarity with the script and her discussions about the character made me think, ‘I’ve found exactly what I was searching for.’
For quite some time, I’ve been searching for an individual with a keen nose and exceptional skills. Given that I consider Julia to be more intelligent than myself, I felt confident that she would handle the situation effectively.
As a dedicated gamer, I, too, found myself part of a project that underwent some major transformations – just like how my in-game character adapts to new challenges. Unlike some of my fellow actors who dropped out during the strikes, I held fast and remained committed to seeing this film through, navigating all the changes like a seasoned player adapting to an ever-evolving game world.
“He hung tough with me,” Cregger said. “That’s my dude right there.”
