Why Paramount Shutting Down HBO Max Is Far More Complex Than Just Merging Platforms, Explained By Streaming Expert

While combining Paramount+ and HBO Max seemed straightforward initially, the plan is actually quite complex and subject to significant changes.

HBO Max, the streaming service behind popular shows like The Pitt, Industry, and Euphoria, might face big changes by 2027. Experts are predicting it could be shut down completely. This comes after Warner Bros. Discovery was acquired by Paramount Skydance in March 2026, leading to plans to combine HBO Max with Paramount+. While those involved are optimistic, some analysts aren’t so sure about the future of the merged service.

According to a recent report by MoffettNathanson analyst Robert Fishman, HBO Max is likely to cease operations by the end of 2027. Separately, David Ellison, CEO of Paramount Skydance, stated that the company plans to merge its streaming service with another, aiming for a combined total of over 200 million subscribers. Ellison believes this will allow them to effectively compete with the biggest players in the direct-to-consumer streaming market, leveraging their combined content and technology.

Streaming media expert Dan Rayburn pointed out a subtle detail in Oracle CEO Ellison’s statements. Rayburn noted Ellison avoided using the word “combining,” suggesting Ellison himself might not fully understand the massive and complex undertaking it would take to merge services. Interestingly, Ellison did actually use the word “combining” in his explanation. Rayburn also believes the media industry is facing difficult times, a reality that has already affected many companies in the field.

According to Rayburn, closing HBO Max would likely result in significant job losses. He explains that transferring knowledge from one company to another – especially understanding how a complex platform like a streaming service operates – takes a lot of time and effort. Rayburn believes the recent merger is still too recent to realistically consider combining two streaming services of that scale, stating it’s simply too early to know how to do it effectively.

Combining Paramount+ and HBO Max into a single streaming service is proving to be a huge challenge, leaving many viewers wondering if it will actually happen. This uncertainty comes as HBO Max continues to develop popular content like more DC shows, a Harry Potter TV series, several Game of Thrones spin-offs, season three of The Last of Us, and season four of The White Lotus. The fate of these shows and franchises now depends on whether the merger of the two streaming platforms succeeds.

Adding to the uncertainty, the merger between Paramount Skydance and Warner Bros. Discovery isn’t official yet. It might not happen at all, particularly due to concerns about fair competition. It’s also unclear how the merger will impact streaming services and movie theaters. As of now, Paramount+ and HBO Max are still operating separately.
