Why Omar Navarro In Ozark Is The Most Underrated Villain You Totally Misjudged

Initially, much like numerous Netflix spectators, I developed a fondness for the captivating series Ozark. However, during my initial viewing of the program, I wasn’t particularly smitten with Omar Navarro. The show boasts an array of intriguing characters, such as the cunning Wendy Byrde and the blunt-speaking antiheroine Ruth Langmore. Marty Byrde, the main character, is relatively subdued compared to others, but his personality provides a harmonious contrast within his family dynamics. Omar Navarro, initially portrayed as the main antagonist, appeared somewhat understated during my first viewing, which left me feeling unengaged.

Each time he appeared on screen, I found myself yearning for additional scenes featuring other villains such as the enigmatic Darlene Snell or the intriguing yet repulsive Cosgroves of the Kansas City Mob. Among them all, Camino “Del” Del Rio from Omar’s cartel stood out as one of the most captivating villains in crime dramas I’ve come across in a while. My heart sank when he perished in Ozark season 1 because I strongly felt his presence was driving the show. However, upon rewatching Ozark, it dawned on me that perhaps I had not been giving Omar enough credit.

Why Omar Is Misconstrued As A “Soft” Villain

He Quietly Wields His Power & Has Others Enact Violence For Him

The main reason many people, including myself, viewed Omar as a “soft” antagonist was that he didn’t appear on screen until season 3, and we didn’t have any direct interactions with the Byrdes prior to this. As an off-screen villain, it was hard for us to consider him a genuine danger since we never witnessed him causing harm to anyone personally. Furthermore, Omar doesn’t come across as ruthless compared to other Ozark villains like Darlene, who went as far as poisoning her own husband, which is a more tangible display of cruelty.

However, there’s no doubt about it, when the Byrdes initially encounter Omar, he clearly poses a danger. The inaugural scene featuring Omar in the pilot episode is both chilling and carefully planned out. Sitting behind his desk, Omar seems almost detached from the brutal violence happening around him, communicating through his enforcers.

As a dedicated movie enthusiast, I found this initial encounter particularly intriguing because it painted him as a man whose influence doesn’t necessitate physical force; instead, his mere aura and standing are potent enough. This dynamic between him and the Byrdes is subtly established, with control exerted not through explicit threats but through the ominous specter of potential violence and a knack for orchestrating circumstances. A prime example is when he issues the chilling command to eliminate Helen. Unlike Gustavo Fring who wields a deadly box cutter, Omar’s icy demeanor still carries an undercurrent of danger.

How Omar’s Relationship With Wendy Is Misunderstood

Their Relationship Is Complex

It is widely assumed that Omar and Wendy have a romantic connection due to their constant flirtatious behavior. Some even speculate that Wendy views Omar as a paternal figure given her eagerness to aid him. She assists him in laundering his money and devises strategies to ensure the safety of both Omar’s family and their own, particularly if tensions with the Laguana cartel escalate. However, they are both focused on ensuring the well-being of their respective families, despite often manipulating them in the process.

In the intricate tapestry of their relationship, one undercurrent is that Omar perceives Wendy as someone who empathizes with his worries about family and heritage. It’s plausible that actress Laura Linney herself questions if Wendy is portrayed as a villain. Similar to how Wendy maneuvers her own family, particularly her children, Omar is striving to mold a future for his kids in a world that could otherwise be devastating for them.

A striking parallel can be seen here: They are parents who manipulate their families to serve their personal goals. Specifically, Wendy urges Omar to seek immunity not merely for business reasons, but as a means to free his children from fear. This is a ploy for respectability, yet it underscores just how deeply embedded her concept of power has become within her.

Wendy is using the idea of immunity to help Omar’s kids avoid fear, which shows that she believes in power so strongly she wants others to see her as powerful too.

Furthermore, while they share a common goal, there’s no genuine trust between Omar and Wendy. Their interactions are more about appearance than sincerity. Omar continually challenges Wendy, just as he does with Marty, but in less obvious, more mentally taxing ways. He sets her difficult tasks or puts her in ethically tricky situations, merely to gauge how far she’ll push boundaries. In response, Wendy consistently prioritizes survival and ambition over morality, which only fuels Omar’s intrigue about her.

Despite my admiration for Omar’s influence, the power disparity between us remains staggering. He stands as a cartel boss, capable of obliterating me in a heartbeat. Our relationship is precarious, a delicate dance on a tightrope. Yet, Wendy’s growing audacity in maneuvering him unveils a strategy that ultimately leads to his demise. To her, I am more than just a partner; I am a stepping stone toward something greater.

On-screen, Omar is vividly portrayed by actor Felix Solis, who masterfully embodies the character’s complex moral ambiguity and strategic demeanor. In an interview with Forbes, Solis elaborated on his method of bringing his Ozark character to life. More specifically, he detailed how he utilized his personal experiences as a business owner to create a compelling portrayal of the character.

He Doesn’t Pull Any Punches

Omar fits perfectly as the villain in Ozark, as his character embodies the show’s core themes, particularly the intricate relationship between bureaucracy and crime within America. Essentially, the series often underscores the idea that a person can thrive as a criminal in America, despite their criminal activities.

Much like a big business CEO, Omar is aiming for a tidier financial record with his cartel operations. He structures it hierarchically, follows strict command chains, and takes a harsh stance on efficiency and loyalty. His plan to use the Byrdes’ casino for money laundering seems strategic – it’s as if he wants to make his criminal earnings appear more legitimate.

In the interactions between Omar and Marty Byrde, it’s clear that Omar’s character embodies a coldly rational approach. His interests lie in succession planning, public relations, and expanding his operations. Essentially, Omar is striving to transform from a criminal figure into an oligarch. This transformation showcases how, when crime becomes successful, it no longer seeks to avoid bureaucracy but rather aims to become it. That’s what makes the character of Omar in “Ozark” so intriguing.
