Why Netflix’s ‘Forever’ Redefines Teen Romance for a New Generation!

On May 8th, Netflix transformed the genre of teen romances with the debut of its new series titled “Forever”. This TV show was crafted by Mara Brock Akil, and it is an updated version of Judy Blume’s 1975 novel that shares the same name. Known as one of the most influential young adult books from the second-wave feminism era, this adaptation on Netflix has garnered much love. The series, which stars Lovie Simone and Michael Cooper Jr., deals with the themes of adolescence and first love in a more contemporary fashion while introducing an intriguing twist. In contrast to the original novel’s white characters and focus on their romantic relationship, the Netflix series primarily revolves around Black characters and delves deeper than just romance.

Two young characters from the original book and its Netflix version find themselves reconnecting at a New Year’s Eve gathering after years apart. As they grow older and develop feelings for each other, their encounter turns into a romantic moment reminiscent of Romeo and Juliet, albeit with some bashful dialogues and playful exchanges. Critics have hailed the series as one of television’s finest romances, which is unsurprising given that Forever seems to execute its love story exceptionally well.

‘Forever’ Introduces Relatable Characters

In this show, the main characters are Keisha and Justin, portrayed by Lovie Simone (from “Manhunt”) and Michael Cooper (from “On the Come Up”). The series doesn’t leave out any details and allows the genuine journey from adolescence to young adulthood to unfold authentically. Keisha and Justin aren’t picture-perfect, and at times they can be quite irritating. This isn’t because of poor writing or acting, but rather it’s intentional. The Netflix romance drama series delves deep into the raw, imperfect, and expansive realm of first love – something this generation, often influenced by media’s unrealistic portrayal of early romantic experiences, can greatly benefit from.

The show “Forever” is rich in relatable characters beyond just Keisha and Justin, which greatly contributes to its high-quality production. The teen drama skillfully portrays the struggles of parenthood, particularly when parents’ aspirations for their children conflict with the teens’ personal passions. Keisha, a character from a working-class family who lives with her single mother, aspires to uphold their dream of her attending a prestigious university. She is diligent, exceeds expectations, and works tirelessly to make her mother proud, but this shared goal doesn’t come without its challenges.

Just as many teenagers do, Keisha has a hidden aspect to her life. Struggling with it on her own, she frets about potentially losing her mother’s admiration. On the other hand, Justin encounters a situation that is remarkably similar yet distinctly different. Coming from a wealthy background and accustomed to exclusive schools and glamorous events, he faces a contrast in his parents’ expectations – they urge him to attend an elite university, whereas his true passion lies in creating hip-hop beats and music production.

In “Forever”, the intricate dance between teenagers and their parents as they navigate the tension between expectations and desires is beautifully portrayed. The story encapsulates the teenage spirit of self-discovery and pride, alongside the mature wisdom and affection of the parents. This novel imparts a profound message to its readers, illustrating that first love can be chaotic, perplexing, and overwhelming, yet it holds immense beauty and valuable lessons as it matures from the adolescent stage into adulthood.

The Modern Depiction of Intimacy in ‘Forever’

Unlike some contentious novels, Forever skillfully steers clear of objectifying characters and constructing implausible romantic relationships. Typically, teen films and series find it challenging to portray sexuality with the necessary complexity. However, this adaptation from book to series demonstrates how it should be done. The characters Keisha and Justin’s sexual encounters do not dominate the narrative but significantly enrich it. The main focus of Forever lies in delving deeper into the characters’ internal conflicts. Nevertheless, the series maintains a balance, providing ample space for intimacy while also creating both on-screen and off-screen environments that are safe and comfortable.

The central duo in the widely watched Netflix series experiences their tangible bond, complete with its highs and lows. It authentically portrays the challenges of figuring out the right moment and place, the embarrassment of learning to coexist, and the journey of understanding intimacy and personal limits. Thankfully, Forever has been granted a second season, as its heartfelt representation of youthful romance warrants further examination.

As a passionate viewer, I can’t help but marvel at how ‘Forever’ masterfully blends the essence of teen romance with the challenges of parenthood. Whether it’s Eric’s creative yet daring test to check Justin’s contraception skills by having him put on a condom in the dark (parents, always coming up with the most unconventional ideas!), or Keisha and Justin learning about consent and growing stronger with each step they take together, ‘Forever’ serves up an irresistible mix of youthful love and parental wisdom.

Forever is available to stream on Netflix.
