Naga has faced a lot of media attention and scrutiny during her time as the host of BBC Breakfast, a highly sought-after position in television.
She faced constant criticism – whether it was accusations of workplace bullying, viewers mistakenly believing a playful remark to Carol Kirkwood showed hidden negativity, or controversy surrounding how much she earned.
Considering all the harsh criticism, unfair judgment, and sexist attacks she’s faced, it’s surprising she hasn’t quit the show before now.

Naga is resilient and isn’t hesitant to use her position in the media to support and advocate for other women.
Last August, while discussing her book, It’s Probably Nothing, she powerfully shared how the medical system frequently overlooks or dismisses women’s health concerns. Her honesty, kindness, and dedication to improving things for women were particularly memorable.

She recounted heartbreaking stories from her interviews for the book, detailing how women and their families faced hardship—even death—while seeking healthcare. She explained that in medical settings, women are often unfairly evaluated based on factors like race, how they speak, or their financial situation, a phenomenon she identified as ‘testimonial injustice’.
She became emotional while sharing the heartbreaking story of a mother who lost her baby during childbirth. She explained this experience highlighted a harmful stereotype – the idea that Asian women are delicate, unable to handle pain, and expect special treatment.

That day, Naga Munchetty demonstrated her ability to handle both sexism in the medical field and personal attacks. Despite facing online criticism for how she presents herself on television, she confidently showed she wasn’t afraid to laugh at herself.
Wiping away tears, she jokingly told BBC interviewer Hugh Pym, “I’m a heartless ice queen, and clearly I resent you for making me share that!”
She quickly followed up her sharp response with a playful jab at previous newspaper stories about her. “I never hit Hugh,” she joked, “so please don’t tell the press I did!”

The book club had a very open conversation that afternoon about women’s health – they discussed everything from vaginal dryness to heavy periods. She also shared personal experiences, including her honest admission that she didn’t want to have children, stating simply, “I don’t really like kids.”
She shared that people had criticized her choice not to have children, wrongly assuming she prioritized her career over family. Despite this judgment, she remained proud of her decision.

Okay, so someone asked me what my husband thought about my choices regarding my own body, and I really let them have it with an honest answer. The crowd went wild – seriously, they were clapping! It felt good to finally say what needed to be said.
She wondered if her husband had actually agreed to this, finding it strange that it felt like a decision being made to her rather than a discussion with her – especially since they’re still married. She was firm: if she didn’t want a baby, she wouldn’t have one. She added that if they’d disagreed on having a child, they likely would have gotten divorced, and he would have found someone who did want one.
“He doesn’t agree to anything, but when it comes to my body he needs to support me.”
Honestly, after finishing that game, I was really struck by how awesome the main female character was. She’s such a great example of someone who takes control and believes in herself – which feels especially important these days when you see so much negativity online about masculinity and what it means to be a man.
It’s great news that Naga will continue to be heard on the radio, as she’ll be staying on at Radio 5 Live full-time.
