Dark Winds, a suspenseful police show taking place in the 1970s, is currently available on Netflix. Based on the enthusiastic feedback it’s received, this series appears to be well worth checking out.
Created by Game of Thrones’ George R.R. Martin and the late Robert Redford, Dark Winds draws its story from the Leaphorn & Chee book series written by Tony Hillerman.
Originally debuting in 2022 on AMC, the show features Zahn McClarnon and Kiowa Gordon playing Navajo Tribal Police officers Joe Leaphorn and Jim Chee, respectively.

The show takes place in the 1970s, in the Four Corners region of the American Southwest. It centers around Lieutenant Leaphorn, who investigates a number of crimes that don’t appear to be connected, with help from his new deputy, Jim Chee.
The story follows two Navajo Nation tribal police officers who investigate a series of crimes in the 1970s. As they look into these apparently unconnected incidents, they are forced to confront past hurts in their search for the truth.
Developed by Graham Roland, Dark Winds features a cast including Jessica Matten, Deanna Allison, Jeremiah Bitsui, Eugene Brave Rock, Noah Emmerich, Rainn Wilson, Elva Guerra, and John Diehl.
The show has aired for three seasons, each with six episodes, and was recently picked up for a fourth season. The third season featured a special guest appearance by the late, great Redford, which turned out to be his final performance on screen.
This intense and thrilling drama has received rave reviews, currently holding a 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Critics are especially impressed with the leading performance by McClarnon.
In a review of the first season, The Guardian described the show as a complex and intriguing mystery, but also one that’s fast-paced enough to watch all at once in a couple of sittings.
According to TIME Magazine, Dark Winds is a truly excellent and visually stunning show, boosted by outstanding acting, and it’s also a significant piece of television.
The Boston Globe commented that McClarnon delivers a flawless performance as a man struggling with the complex task of safeguarding and controlling his community. They also praised the series’ stunning visuals and McClarnon’s measured and thoughtful movements throughout.
Dark Winds seems poised to skillfully blend a typical murder mystery with the complexities of tribal customs and beliefs, and even a touch of the supernatural, all anchored by a compelling performance from McClarnon,” noted Decider.
Variety reported that Dark Winds is straightforward and doesn’t waste time explaining things to the audience. It confidently assumes viewers will understand the setting and context.
Ultimately, Dark Winds is highly recommended due to its acting, filmmaking, setting, and overall aesthetic. However, AV Club notes that the series doesn’t quite deliver satisfying resolutions to its central puzzles.
Dark Winds is now streaming on Netflix.
