As a fan, I was really worried when the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes hit Hollywood last year. I recently learned just how close we came to losing a show I was excited about – Wonder Man, starring Yahya Abdul-Mateen II. Apparently, the showrunner, Andrew Guest, shared that the strikes almost led to the project being scrapped altogether. They were seriously considering canceling it just to get a tax break, which is a scary thought! It’s a relief to hear it’s still moving forward.
Andrew Guest says Wonder Man came close to getting canceled
The experienced TV writer recently revealed at a Hollywood Reporter event that the team behind the show Wonder Man considered canceling it entirely for tax purposes. Surprisingly, this discussion happened even after they had already filmed about half of the season.
I was really surprised to hear that the Marvel series was almost cancelled. Andrew Guest told Laughing Place that they were considering stopping production right when our own strike was hitting the halfway point. He said it might have been an easy way for Disney to save money on taxes, but the people actually making the show – Brian and the whole team – really fought hard to get it finished. They believed in this strange, and honestly kind of sad, show and were willing to go all-out to bring it back. It was a big risk for them, but they were dedicated to seeing it through.
Wonder Man nearly suffered the same cancellation as the Batgirl movie from the old DC film universe. Batgirl was canceled simply for tax reasons, even though it was almost finished. Luckily, the Marvel show avoided this fate and recently launched its first season on Disney+.
Marvel’s decision to move forward with Wonder Man appears to be a good one, as the show has received very positive reviews. Currently, it holds a 90% approval rating from both critics and audiences on Rotten Tomatoes.
Even though fans have loved Wonder Man, Marvel Studios hasn’t announced whether the show will be back for a second season yet.
