Why KPop Demon Hunters wasn’t even nominated at the BAFTAs

In 2025, KPop Demon Hunters was a massive hit, becoming the most popular movie ever on Netflix and appearing everywhere in popular culture. You’ve likely heard its signature song, ‘Golden,’ even if you haven’t watched the film.

It’s fitting that the EE BAFTA Film Awards are celebrating the film’s global success with a special live performance. Ejae, Audrey Nuna, and Rei Ami – the singers behind the characters Rumi, Mira, and Zoey – will be performing their song ‘Golden’ at the ceremony. This will be their first time performing live outside of the United States.

It’s surprising that, even though it’s been well-received, KPop Demon Hunters wasn’t nominated for a BAFTA in the Children’s & Family Film or Animated Film categories. Also, unlike the Oscars, the BAFTAs don’t have an award for Original Song, which is where the song ‘Golden’ received its nomination.

The Children’s & Family Film category will be a competition between Arco, Boong, Lilo & Stitch, and Zootropolis 2. Meanwhile, Elio, Little Amélie or the Character of Rain, and Zootropolis 2 are all vying for the Animated Film award.

It’s surprising that KPop Demon Hunters didn’t win either of those awards, and the reason is simply the competition rules.

Generally, films need to be shown in cinemas to be considered for BAFTA awards. However, according to Variety, there are rare exceptions – like special event screenings – where a film can still qualify.

The series KPop Demon Hunters initially premiered on Netflix. It also had brief showings in UK cinemas in August and again around Halloween. Netflix appealed to authorities, hoping these limited theatrical releases would qualify it for consideration under certain rules.

Bad news for UK viewers hoping to see the film recognized by BAFTA: the organization has denied its eligibility. Although the movie did have a limited theatrical release, it didn’t show in enough UK cinemas – it needed at least ten screenings lasting a total of seven days – to qualify for consideration.

Like other films hoping to qualify for the Oscars, KPop Demon Hunters had to be shown in theaters for at least a week. It met this requirement with screenings in San Francisco, Los Angeles County, and New York City, coinciding with its release on Netflix.

I’m so excited because everyone’s predicting KPop Demon Hunters could win both Animated Feature and Original Song at the Oscars! It would be amazing if it did, and honestly, it would be a huge deal. Variety pointed out that if it wins Animated Feature, it’ll be the first movie to do so without a BAFTA nomination first – that’s pretty incredible!

The recent popularity of KPop Demon Hunters on Netflix shows the show consistently surpasses expectations.
