Why KPop Demon Hunters Deserves a Bigger Theatrical Release Than You Think!

It might appear that being an entertainment journalist makes it simple for us to become blasé about the industry, but nothing brings me more joy than a film that catches me off guard. Although I was aware that Netflix’s KPop Demon Hunters was well-received when it was released in 2025, I didn’t manage to watch it during its initial week. However, the movie’s continued success on the domestic Top 10 list, along with the intriguing character you see depicted here – Derpy Tiger – eventually piqued my curiosity over the weekend.

After watching this animated adventure personally, I must admit it’s a reason to rejoice! However, it stirred up thoughts about an aspect I wish Netflix could improve in their films. Now, let’s delve into the dilemma these angels and demons on my shoulders are causing me.

KPop Demon Hunters Is Just What My Colorful Musical Heart Needed

To begin on a positive note, the animated film “KPop Demon Hunters” has undeniably made an impressive mark in 2025, competing with other highly anticipated releases like “Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl” and “The Day the Earth Blew Up”. Despite the tough competition, I firmly believe its merits are noteworthy. The movie showcases striking visuals reminiscent of “Spider-Verse”, coupled with the intricate dance routines and captivating music that KPop is renowned for. This family-friendly spectacle is definitely worth a watch.

In this vibrant and emotional film by directors Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans, a team of demon hunters/KPop group Huntr/x engage in an intense battle against the Saja Boys, a band of demonic entities. Whilst the female characters strive to separate our world from that of demons, the male counterparts are determined to undo all the advancements made so far.

In the fierce competition for Netflix subscriptions, things get real and rhythmic, with an infectious blend of K-pop beats that you’ll find hard to shake off. Now, you might be puzzled given my enthusiasm for KPop Demon Hunters. However, it seems this Netflix original, a sensation in the animated world, feels like another disappointment rather than the triumph I’ve been praising.

There Should Have Been A Wider Theatrical Release For This Netflix Movie

It seems that KPop Demon Hunters had a limited theater release, at least according to the official press page on Netflix’s media library. However, just a week after its premiere, I have not been able to find any theater playing this exciting adventure. Although most major theaters usually do not screen Netflix films without a special agreement like Glass Onion, there are several independent theaters that typically carry their product.

The animated series “KPop Demon Hunters” boasts an exhilarating soundtrack and breathtaking visuals that would undoubtedly shine on the big screen. Fortunately, Sony Pictures Animation’s masterpiece doesn’t require much persuasion, as evidenced by the video that supports this claim, which is easily accessible. Given that KPop is currently a global sensation, I believe that the movie KPop Demon Hunters should have been released in cinemas instead. This would have greatly benefited the marketing of the film, as associating it with a cultural powerhouse like KPop could have significantly boosted its appeal. While it has managed to find an audience on streaming platforms, showing it in theaters would have made even more sense given its potential success.

Perhaps if we create enough buzz, our dance group could have a grand theatrical release, much like Disney moved their film “Turning Red” from Disney+ to cinema screens.
