Why Jyn Erso Didn’t Appear in Andor Season 2, Shocked Fans

As a die-hard movie fan here, I can share that Tony Gilroy, the mastermind behind “Andor,” has shed some light on why we don’t see Jyn Erso (Felicity Jones) in season 2. Given that the second and concluding season is set four years prior to the events of “Rogue One,” it sparked curiosity about whether Jyn would be part of the season 2 ensemble. Despite numerous mentions of her father, Galen Erso (Mads Mikkelsen), and the planet Eadu where he resides, Jyn herself remains absent from the series, never even getting a nod.

In an interview with Backstory Magazine, Gilroy mentioned that when planning season 2, he thoughtfully considered various aspects, including the prospect of Jyn’s involvement. He highly respects Jones both as an actor and a person, expressing his desire to collaborate with her once more. Many fans had hoped to see her return, but unfortunately, Gilroy felt there wasn’t a suitable or impactful way to incorporate her character into the narrative, which is why she does not appear in the season. Here are his thoughts below:

While crafting season 2 following season 1, I was meticulously considering every aspect. Felicity is an exceptional actress and a wonderful individual, and I was well-aware of the ardent admiration for her among fans and the numerous requests for this development. If I could have devised a plan that didn’t disrupt the existing narrative, I believe Lucasfilm wouldn’t have had any objections. However, once you embark on such a journey, one must see it through to its conclusion. Was there a link to Saw, and then we delved into that, but then we returned, and what did he say in Rogue One? It never felt cohesive.

What This Means For Andor

Existing Canon Made A Jyn Appearance Challenging

It’s no shock that Gilroy is fond of Jyn due to his work on Rogue One, but he wouldn’t include her in Andor unless it aligned with the story. Given their significant history, Saw Gerrera (Forest Whitaker) and Jyn, and Saw being a central figure in Andor, it was logical for Gilroy to initially consider a connection between them. However, as suggested by his remarks, this plan wouldn’t have been feasible due to the dialogue in Rogue One, where Jyn mentions not seeing Saw since she was 16.

In the timeline shared by both “Andor” and “Rogue One”, it was already established that Cassian Andor (Diego Luna) and Jyn had never crossed paths before “Rogue One”, and that Jyn kept her distance from the Rebel Alliance until they sought her out on Wobani, a fact unknown to the Empire. This left few opportunities for Jyn to become involved in “Andor”, especially considering she couldn’t interact with Cassian, the Rebel Alliance, or reveal her true identity to the Empire. Additionally, much of Jyn’s story within the “Andor” timeline has already been presented in the novel “Rebel Rising” by Beth Revis.

Our Take On Tony Gilroy’s Comments

The Best Decision Was Made

While I found Jyn’s character from Rogue One quite engaging, I’m relieved she didn’t appear in Andor‘s season 2 finale or earlier episodes. Given the intricacies of the established storyline within the canon timeline, and considering the many other storylines and character arcs needing resolution in season 2, it was wise to keep her out. Unlike some shows that might introduce familiar characters for mere nostalgia, Andor has consistently prioritized narrative significance over fan service, a trend that persisted until the series finale.
