Why Joker’s Big DCU Debut Could Make or Break the Franchise

In the approaching DC Universe, there are numerous challenges to overcome, but one particularly daunting task will be managing the introduction of the infamous character, the Joker. Known as the Clown Prince of Crime, he’s made almost as many media appearances as Batman himself. However, presenting this villain requires a great deal of thoughtfulness due to his significant presence in popular culture.

The DC Universe initiated by James Gunn and Peter Safran has technically commenced last year with the release of Creature Commandos, but many eagerly anticipate this summer’s Superman movie as its genuine commencement. Though fans have merely caught fleeting glimpses of what this new DCU encompasses, the franchise is a realistic adaptation where numerous heroes and villains already reside, including Batman. So far, the DCU’s Joker hasn’t been unveiled, but other films and series have barely touched upon his most compelling narratives. There are countless iconic comics that could be utilized to bring the Joker to life within the DCU.

The Joker’s Appearances Have Never Slowed Down

Fans Have Seen a Lot of the Joker…Maybe Too Much?

Among Batman’s infamous enemies, none have garnered the notoriety quite like the Joker. Who else has played such a pivotal role in the Dark Knight’s life or caused so much misery for the Bat-Family? From “Death in the Family” to “The Killing Joke,” the Joker has repeatedly tormented Bruce Wayne, making his life a perpetual nightmare. While this has solidified him as arguably the quintessential Batman villain, it has also led to an overwhelming sense of Joker-centric storylines among fans, often referred to as “Joker fatigue.

In many Batman comics, the Joker appears more frequently than other villains. However, his constant appearances have led to reactions ranging from eye-rolls to a lack of tension among readers. For instance, in Chip Zdarsky’s run on Batman, it was revealed that the Joker’s escalating violent acts were actually designed to lure out Batman’s alternate personality (the Batman of Zur-En-Arrh) for a fight. More recently, the Joker has taken center stage in the “Hush 2” storyline, where he was attacked by Hush, prompting Batman to nurse him back to health.

As a die-hard DC fan, I can’t help but feel that the Joker has been an inescapable presence in my favorite live-action adaptations. He was brilliantly played by Jared Leto in Suicide Squad and the Snyder Cut of Justice League, and even made a brief appearance in The Batman, with Barry Keoghan bringing him to life. The Joker also headlined his own two-film franchise, starting with Joker, where Joaquin Phoenix took on the iconic role. To put it simply, it seems like I’ve barely had a moment’s rest from the Joker.

The Joker is a Fine Needle to Thread for the DCU

Gunn Must Be Careful About Introducing the Joker

The Creature Commandos series offers a glimpse into the style of Gunn and Safran’s DC Universe, and it delivers effectively. This new DC Universe appears more realistic with a rich history, boasting many well-established characters and heroes already in existence. For instance, Batman is confirmed to have been active during Doctor Phosphorous’ flashback. Gunn seems to understand the audience well enough to recognize that fans are familiar with villains like Joker, allowing them to bypass showing his notorious origin story altogether.

Understanding that Gunn (or perhaps director Andy Muschietti) might consider incorporating the Joker character, let’s discuss the most engaging way to introduce him. Many fans are likely satisfied with not seeing the Joker in the initial Batman film of the DCU. It could be beneficial to wait a few movies to pique fan interest about his whereabouts. To hint at his presence, Batman could investigate crime scenes with bodies displaying chilling grins, reminiscent of Batman’s first encounter with the Joker back in the 1940s.

In truth, there are numerous compelling tales ripe for cinematic interpretation that revolve around an established Joker character. For example, “Under the Red Hood” offers a blend of action and emotion that fans would appreciate. DC Studios could expand this by adapting works such as “Arkham Asylum: A Serious House on Serious Earth,” where the Joker is one of several villains instead of being the main focus. Alternatively, director James Gunn might opt for a grander approach, incorporating the Joker as a significant character in a Justice League film. In this scenario, the villain could ally with his fellow members of the Legion of Doom.

Bringing the Joker Back to Live-Action is Hard, But Not Impossible

The DCU Needs to Do Something New and Exciting with Batman’s Adversary

In The Dark Knight, Heath Ledger’s Joker aptly stated that he and Batman were forever bound to clash. Given Bruce Wayne’s existence, the Joker is an inevitable character (even the Joker himself understood this). Introducing the Joker in a fresh manner within the DC Universe is no small feat, considering his extensive portrayals across cartoons, television shows, video games, movies, and comics for almost three decades. Nevertheless, there are creative ways to keep the Joker engaging within the DCU.

In a different approach, the Joker doesn’t necessarily have to be the central antagonist in a Batman movie. He’s known as Batman’s arch-nemesis, and fans crave something more than just another two hours of Batman battling the clownish villain. The Joker could instead operate from behind the scenes or work with other villains, offering a fresh perspective that deviates from viewers’ typical expectations of the character. And let’s be honest, how exciting would it be to see the Joker team up with someone like Gorilla Grodd?

James Gunn, managing the upcoming DC Universe, has plenty to think about. Although handling the Joker may not be his immediate priority, he’s astute enough to understand that the next time the Joker appears on screen, it should be refreshing and innovative for longtime fans. This could mean using him in a new role or having him work as part of a team. Regardless of how the Joker enters the DC Universe, James Gunn and his team will undoubtedly put considerable thought into the process.
