Why it's so much better that Billy's looking for SPOILER in Agatha All Along

Warning: MAJOR spoilers ahead for Episode 6 of Agatha All Along.

As a longtime comic book enthusiast with a soft spot for the X-Men and their mutant brethren, I can’t help but feel a sense of excitement when it comes to the introduction of Billy Kaplan (Wiccan) and Tommy Shepherd (Speed). Growing up reading about these characters in the pages of Marvel Comics, I was always captivated by their unique bond as twin brothers and the incredible powers they wielded.

As a gamer, I was totally hooked by the latest installment of “Agatha All Along”. It finally shed light on the intriguing backstory of Billy Maximoff/William Kaplan. Turns out, following a fatal car crash, Billy’s spirit took over William’s body, and he’s been grappling with figuring out what led to this twist in his life and discovering his true identity ever since.

As a die-hard fan, one of the most thrilling twists that caught my attention in the series was learning that Billy was embarking on the Witches’ Road, on a quest to find his twin brother, Tommy. This revelation has sparked quite a stir among us fans, as many had anticipated that this journey would culminate in the revival of Wanda Maximoff, the Scarlet Witch. In fact, I too believed this was imminent, and had not even considered Tommy’s potential return to the cast of ‘Wandavision’.

While it’s not incorrect to say that Billy is searching for his brother first, it doesn’t necessarily imply a mistake in this decision. There are numerous motivations for Billy to prioritize finding his brother, and this choice could be promising for the ongoing narrative of the MCU. By focusing on Tommy rather than Wanda, there’s potential for character development that goes beyond being mere plot devices.

Why it doesn’t make sense for Billy to be looking for Wanda

In the realm of “WandaVision,” I find myself pondering why Billy isn’t seeking out Wanda. It’s evident that the character we know as Billy Maximoff harbors feelings for her, but it’s important to remember that the Billy Kaplan we see isn’t the same individual. In this particular narrative timeline, he lacks memories of both his childhoods, which means he hasn’t formed a genuine bond with Wanda. He’s more intrigued by discovering his own identity rather than yearning for a parent who is no longer around.

It’s widely accepted that Wanda Maximoff has perished, though the details of “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” may not be fully public yet. Even so, her death is a well-recognized fact. Billy claims he can sense Tommy, but not Wanda. Given his lack of expertise, it’s significant that raising the dead is one of the most commonly known aspects about magic, both in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and reality at large.

Agatha speculates that Billy might not be looking for Wanda because he harbors resentment towards her. At the very least, she decided to give up the twins to liberate Westview, but news about Wanda in the MCU has often been biased. Even though the Avengers’ public relations team hid the Hex, he would still be aware of the bomb incident from “Civil War” and her past as a terrorist in Sokovia.

If that’s true, it seems he might hesitate to meet Wanda, due to his belief that she might be as wicked as the stories suggest. Yet, I find such a notion improbable. Despite his words, it appears he’s willing to collaborate with Agatha, suggesting morality isn’t his sole consideration. It seems more plausible that he doubts encountering her again is feasible, rather than judging her based on her reputation.

For the time being, here’s an interpretation: Fans are interpreting his quest to locate Tommy as a sign of rejection towards Wanda, but it might simply be a future assignment. As he struggles with controlling his magic, even if bringing back the dead (necromancy) was feasible, he lacks the necessary strength to attempt it. For now, teaming up with Agatha could help him master his abilities. Just as she guided Wanda in understanding her powers in the comics, she’ll probably assist Billy in doing the same.

After gaining more authority, Billy could potentially revive Wanda and embark on a search for Vision, a character that not many fans appear overly invested in locating. However, these missions are likely to be far more challenging than finding his brother, who is already present in this dimension, sharing a psychic bond with him.

Billy needs to meet Tommy first

Given all the circumstances, it’s quite natural for Billy to search for Tommy first. After all, he’s the one Billy appears to recall, and their connection makes beginning the search smoother. Indeed, that’s where Billy will begin! However, it’s not only about logic. It significantly enhances the narrative for Billy to be seeking Tommy.

In the world of WandaVision and Multiverse of Madness, it’s clear that the two brothers share a strong bond, reminiscent of the deep connections twins often possess in reality and in media. Whether the show delves into this theme or not, the siblings are frequently portrayed as partners in crime and protectors of their family, working together to create trouble and ensure their safety.

In the comics, Billy and Tommy had been partners and later brothers much earlier than when they began their search for Wanda. The truth about their past lives was unveiled just one issue after Billy and Tommy first met, but it took another two years before they started searching for Wanda. It wasn’t until another two years later that they finally encountered her, and it took an additional three years for her to acknowledge them as her offspring.

In the fictional world, a gap of five years existed between when Tommy first appeared and when Wanda recognized him. This deliberate pacing allowed the comic books to portray Wiccan and Speed as distinct personalities before they could be perceived as just sidekicks for Wanda, thus establishing their individual identities.

It’s logical for the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) to depict them as brothers initially. Regardless of their separate paths, they were deeply connected characters in the comics, a relationship worth exploring on-screen. To recapture the magic of the early MCU phases, it’s crucial to develop complex characters with intricate backstories, and this is one way to achieve that.

Demonstrate the siblings discovering how to handle their intertwined identities collectively. Allow them to playfully spar and bolster one another. Let them evolve into a united family. It’s essential to delve deeper into their relationship dynamics with either parent only after this bond has been established. If the storytellers aim to resonate with viewers, they should first ensure that Billy and Tommy are characters we care about deeply. To intensify the plot, consider a scenario where reuniting Wanda could jeopardize one of the brothers. Such difficult decisions have a greater emotional impact when the audience is invested in the characters’ well-being from the beginning.

Those viewers who reacted to this episode with “Yes, yes, but where’s Wanda?” are exactly why the story is not centered around Wanda. This is because Billy Kaplan and Tommy Shepherd are multifaceted characters in their own right, and they deserve to have their individual complexity acknowledged. The inclusion of Wiccan in the narrative can serve a purpose beyond merely acting as a tool to reintroduce Wanda, and the same goes for Speed.

Fans of superheroes often express dissatisfaction with the latest characters, claiming they lack depth and are mere imitations of their predecessors. They argue that Marvel is incapable of introducing anything fresh. However, as long as fans yearn for the return of established characters, it’s challenging for them to deviate from the familiar mold.

As a gaming enthusiast diving into the captivating world of comics, I can’t help but feel excited about the incredible destinies of Wiccan and Tommy. With Wiccan growing up to wield some of the most potent magic ever seen, and Tommy on the brink of a similarly awe-inspiring journey, they are truly trailblazers within the LGBTQ+ community.
