Why isn’t Sally Hawkins back as Mrs Brown for Paddington in Peru?

As a seasoned gamer of both movies and real-life adventures, I must say that the news about Sally Hawkins not returning as Mrs. Brown in Paddington 3 has left me feeling like someone had just swapped out my favorite controller with an unfamiliar model.

After a seven-year hiatus, we’ll be reunited with Paddington Bear and the Brown family on screen once more in Paddington 3, however, there are some new developments.

It had been clear ever since the third film was officially confirmed in June 2022, that the original director, Paul King, would not return for the project. Instead, Dougal Wilson took up the director’s role, while King continued his involvement by contributing to the storyline as an executive producer.

Yet, a surprise followed Paddington enthusiasts when the cast list was unveiled in June 2023, showing that Sally Hawkins would no longer play Mrs. Brown, as Emily Mortimer stepped into the role instead.

As “Paddington” hits UK theaters next Friday (11/8), you may find yourself puzzled about why Hawkins is no longer portraying the character, and that’s exactly what we’re here to clarify for you!

Suiting the family-friendly nature of this popular show, Sally Hawkins’ departure from the series wasn’t shrouded in debate or secrecy; instead, she simply felt that the moment had come for her to move on.

Hawkins stated that she believed it was the perfect moment for her to pass on leadership responsibilities to someone else, and there isn’t anyone more fitting than the exceptional Emily Mortimer. In fact, Mortimer is exceptionally remarkable.

She’ll encapsulate the spirit of Mary Brown while still putting her unique touch on it. Yet, my affection for Paddington’s universe remains unwavering. Alas, I already deeply miss both my on-set and off-camera loved ones.

Creating the initial two movies was undeniably some of the most exhilarating, innovative periods I’ve encountered in the film industry. Each one brought me immense happiness. I shall always cherish them deeply within my heart.

Ever since then, I’ve been left wondering what prompted Hawkins to take this step back. She’s not one for frequent interviews, so it wasn’t unexpected that we didn’t hear any further explanations from her.

Hugh Bonneville, well-known for his portrayal of Mr. Brown, has assured viewers that the upcoming film will not contain any ominous or secretive elements.

In October 2024, he clarified that it was simply a straightforward change, not a messy breakup or anything of the sort. He mentioned that Emily appeared to be an ideal match for the role.

Wilson remarked, “It was fortunate for us to secure Emily. She’s luminous, warm, and incredibly intelligent; being a writer herself, she’s exceptional at improvising lines. Her role is challenging: She serves as the emotional heart of the Browns and shares a deep emotional bond with Paddington.

Mortimer has been silent so far regarding assuming the role, but with the film almost ready for cinema release, it might not be long before she shares her thoughts on becoming part of this cherished series.

The third movie experienced a casting shift during production, with Rachel Zegler being unavailable due to labor disputes. Consequently, Carla Tous stepped in to take on the role originally intended for Zegler.

The movie “Paddington” is set to hit UK theaters on November 8, while audiences in the US can look forward to it from January 17, 2025.
