Why isn't Nick Diaz fighting at UFC Abu Dhabi anymore?

As a gamer who has followed MMA for years, I can’t help but feel like Nick Diaz is the troubled hero of this sport. His career is as rollercoaster-ish as any game I’ve ever played, with highs that make you cheer and lows that make you want to throw your controller across the room.

In the world of UFC, numerous legendary figures have graced their roster, with some claiming titles and others simply providing enjoyable fights as consistent performers. Among these entertainers were the Diaz brothers, known for their electrifying performances in and out of the ring. Nate Diaz, the younger sibling, garnered significant attention by consistently delivering thrilling matches, irrespective of his opponents. Unfortunately, Nick Diaz, the older brother, had the potential to achieve similar levels of fame but was unable to do so due to intricate complications in his career path.

Back in August 2001, I kicked off my MMA journey with small fighting circuits like the IFC Warriors and WEC. My unique style, characterized by strong finishing moves, eventually caught the attention of the UFC, who welcomed me into their ranks in 2005. My UFC debut was against a familiar face, Jeremy Jackson, whom I’d previously squared off with twice outside the UFC, and we were evenly matched at 1-1. I secured a third-round submission victory and delivered a series of exciting fights within the UFC. Unfortunately, I stumbled in a three-match losing streak that could have jeopardized my UFC career. But luck was on my side when I scored a decision win over Ray Steinbeiss at International Cage Fighting, which helped me regain momentum and keep moving forward.

As a gamer, I’d say: Before my UFC stint, I had a massive career leap when I battled it out in Strikeforce, claiming the welterweight title. Defending that title felt like winning again and again in my favorite video game. The plan was for me to square off against George St-Pierre, then the UFC welterweight champion, in 2011. Unfortunately, I skipped out on all media press conferences, which led to me being benched from that event. Instead, I faced BJ Penn in the main event of UFC 137 as a No.1 contender. I emerged victorious with a unanimous decision win in October 2011.

Subsequently, it was found that Nick had traces of marijuana in his system, leading to a suspension that lasted approximately a year. The much-anticipated match between him and St-Pierre took place in March 2013 at UFC 158 for the welterweight title, with St-Pierre emerging victorious by unanimous decision. There were doubts about Nick’s retirement, as many found it hard to believe. He made his comeback to the UFC with a fresh contract in July 2014. His return bout was the main event against Anderson Silva in January 2015 at UFC 183. However, Silva’s win was changed to a no-contest after he tested positive for drostanolone and androsterone. The most detrimental incident in Nick’s career occurred later, when he was suspended for five years starting from September 2015 due to the discovery of marijuana in his system at UFC 183.

Nick Diaz was supposed to fight Vicente Luque at UFC Abu Dhabi

In September 2021, after a three-year hiatus, Nick stepped back into the Octagon at UFC 266 for a rematch against Robbie Lawler, whom he previously knocked out when they were both rising stars. Unfortunately, on this occasion, Nick struggled and tapped out in the third round. It’s reported that Nick was injured prior to the fight and was experiencing financial difficulties, which may have affected his mental state. The match scheduled for August 3 against No. 13 ranked welterweight Vicente Luque as a special 5-round co-main event in Abu Dhabi was canceled due to travel issues, with plans now underway to reschedule the fight at a later date. It seems that Nick’s infrequent appearances are largely due to injuries and a challenging relationship with the UFC stemming from past controversies.
