Why I Disagreed With the Fifteenth Doctor’s Harshness Toward Omo in Season 15

As a die-hard Doctor Who fan, I must say that the fifteenth season has been nothing short of captivating so far, with just five episodes under our belts. It’s introduced a fresh addition to the pantheon, stirred up even more intrigue surrounding Mrs. Flood, and rekindled discussions about the elusive Timeless Child plot. With only a handful of episodes remaining before the grand finale, I can hardly wait for the answers that are surely on their way!

The latest installment of “Doctor Who”, titled “The Story & the Engine” from season 15, could very well be the standout episode thus far. This time, our dynamic duo, the Doctor and Belinda, find themselves making a brief stopover in bustling Lagos, Nigeria. Here, viewers were not only immersed in Nigerian culture but also enriched by its renowned storytelling heritage. The plot unveils a new adversary, the enigmatic Barber, and even includes an unexpected guest appearance that sparked whispers of a potential fresh spinoff for “Doctor Who”. Despite my enthusiasm for “The Story & the Engine”, there was one scene that left me feeling slightly uneasy.

The Fifteenth Doctor Was Harsh About Omo’s Betrayal In Season 15, Episode 5

His Anger Was Understandable, But Blaming Omo Was Unfair

When the Doctor enters the barbershop, Omo’s face lights up with joy and he welcomes him inside. He doesn’t alert the Doctor about the impending danger, and it isn’t until the Doctor settles in the Barber’s chair that he realizes it was a trap. After recharging the ship’s engine with his story, the Doctor expresses his feelings of betrayal towards Omo and lashes out at him. Omo tries to justify himself by explaining that he was just trying to get the other hostages back to their families, but the Doctor responds angrily, questioning, “So, because I have no home, I’m what? I’m disposable?”

After attempting to depart from the store, the Doctor is met with an explanation from Omo and the group that it’s more complicated than that. When Omo attempts to bar his exit, the Doctor retorts: “‘Never speak to me again. I placed my trust in you, putting both my hearts, everything I am, into your care. How could you?’

Although I acknowledge that the Doctor may have been wounded by Omo’s behavior, I believe his allegation is quite unjustified. It might be reasonable for Omo to hold back information initially, given his responsibility for safeguarding the hostages. Moreover, it’s worth considering that the Doctor voluntarily entered the shop, and even if Omo had advised him to keep away, he likely wouldn’t have heeded the warning.

It appears that Omo found comfort in seeing the Doctor enter the shop since he recognizes the Doctor as someone who assists people and is particularly adept at handling tricky situations compared to others. By sharing the Doctor’s tales with the Barber, he was essentially trying to stall so he could continue aiding others, and probably thought that the Doctor would devise a solution.

Omo Was Only Doing What The Doctor Himself Usually Does

The Doctor Has Often Traded Himself For Other Hostages

As a devoted fan of the Doctor’s adventures, I can’t help but feel that his stern response towards Omo was out of character, given the selfless nature he usually embodies. In most cases, the Doctor has shown an incredible readiness to put himself on the line for the safety of others. A perfect illustration is the scene in “The Rings of Akhaten” from season 7, where the Eleventh Doctor bravely sacrificed his memories to save a young girl by feeding them to a parasitic entity. Across all regenerations of this remarkable character, there have been instances where they’ve demonstrated an unwavering willingness to sacrifice themselves for others.

In a more recent instance, during season 15’s opening episode, “The Robot Revolution,” the Fifteenth Doctor demonstrated his readiness to exchange himself for another. When Belinda Chandra is confronted by the Great AI Generator, the Doctor offers to weld with it instead of her, arguing that he possesses greater power and can survive the process while Belinda could not. However, one might question why he wouldn’t be willing to sacrifice his life for the hostages in “The Story & the Engine,” given that he has an infinite supply of stories left to tell?

The Fifteenth Doctor’s Reaction Shows How Important Omo’s Palace Had Become To Him

Omo’s Palace Was Like A Second Home For Him

Although the Fifteenth Doctor’s angry reaction towards Omo might not have been completely warranted, it’s understandable that he would be frustrated by his current circumstances. As the Doctor explains to Belinda within the TARDIS, his latest regeneration as a black man restricts his safe havens. Omo’s Palace serves as one of those rare sanctuaries for him – a place where he can forge bonds with other black individuals and feel a sense of belonging and camaraderie.

When the Doctor stepped into Omo’s Palace, he had no inkling of the peril, and thus he became careless. In speaking to Omo, he remarked, “I adore this establishment. I adored you, Omo. I believed it was a sanctuary for me. I felt secure.” His words resonated deeply with Omo, as they should have. However, the Doctor’s outburst towards Omo concealed misdirected rage, which he ought to have vented at the Barber, who was truly the culprit for transforming a haven into something terrifying.

Omo Was Right – The Doctor Figured Out A Way To Escape That The Others Couldn’t

The Doctor Proved Omo’s Instincts Right When He Saved Them All

Despite being betrayed by Omo’s suspicion, it turned out that Omo was correct in allowing the Doctor access to the barbershop since he ultimately played a crucial role in saving the day. Alongside Abby, the Doctor and Belinda discovered the story engine and opened it, unveiling the ship’s core. However, when the Barber tried to intervene, the Doctor absorbed his essence into the engine, demonstrating his ability to regenerate indefinitely, thereby creating an endless tale that outmatched the engine’s power.

Understanding that the engine’s power would result in their deaths, the Barber implores the Doctor to halt it, arguing he is a guardian, not a destroyer. However, the Doctor counters that by allowing the engine to explode, he is safeguarding the rest of the world – unless the Barber releases them all. Reluctantly, he agrees, and the group manages to flee moments before the colossal spider and the Nexus are annihilated.

It’s quite ironic, given that the Doctor scolded Omo for performing an action he himself ended up doing – sacrificing himself (along with everyone in Omo’s Palace) to save mankind. In this instance, one could argue that the Fifteenth Doctor displayed a hint of hypocrisy. However, much like how the Doctor eventually forgave Omo and the Barber, I suppose it’s only fair for me to forgive him too.
