Why I, and countless other gay men, owe Shawn Mendes an apology

I must confess, I too find myself at a loss for words and feeling rather remorseful. For years, like countless others, I too have been guilty of participating in the relentless speculation about Shawn Mendes’s personal life. Jokes with friends, harmless banter online – it was all part of the game, wasn’t it?

I owe Shawn Mendes an apology. And, frankly, so do thousands of other people.

For several years, there have been numerous discussions regarding the sexual orientation of the popular heartthrob. This week, during a concert in Colorado, the singer openly shared his thoughts, stating at age 26, he is still discovering his own sexual identity.

Mendes shared during a public appearance, “I’ve had a private struggle with my sexuality for as long as I can remember. People have been discussing it for such a prolonged period, which always felt like an unwarranted intrusion into something deeply personal to me – a journey of self-discovery that remains ongoing.

‘The real truth’, he concluded, is that ‘I’m just figuring it out like everyone.’

Well, now I feel kind of terrible!

Instead of openly admitting that, similar to numerous other gay men and self-proclaimed supporters, I immersed myself for quite some time in the intense online conjecture – essentially an all-consuming curiosity – regarding Mendes’s personal life and sexual orientation.

Has there been a situation where people have either spread the notion that well-groomed, more effeminate men are likely gay or speculated provocatively about their intriguing fashion choices (he does have a penchant for fitted crop tops!), with Shawn unfortunately becoming the target of such behavior? It’s unfortunate to admit, but I too have contributed to this, albeit in a less aggressive and vulgar manner.

For a long time, I’ve playfully teased my gay friends about Mendes, suggesting that despite his relationships with high-profile women, he might actually identify as part of our community. I’ve likely shared similar lighthearted comments on social media too.

The issue appears to have caused significant distress, leading Mendes to feel pressured or encouraged to publicly acknowledge his sexual orientation, suggesting he may identify as part of the LGBTQ+ community.

It’s not really shocking that he voiced his opinion, considering the relentless and powerful nature of this online movement.

This month’s viral video features an interview segment where an energized Mendes donned yet another fitted crop top that seems impossible to fit.

The comments posted below the video – many unpublishable here – were as cruel as they were endless.

‘I know what you are Shawn,’ one user taunted.

‘Did he officially come out yet?’ asked another.

“The saddest aspect of Mendes’ speech in Colorado this week was his belief that his ongoing struggle with understanding his sexuality is a common experience, as he put it, ‘I’m discovering who I am just like everyone else.’

By the year 2024, it’s less typical for someone at the age of 26 to still be in a stage of exploration or discovery, as societal awareness and maturity have advanced significantly.

It’s a relief that the times have changed from when many gay men felt compelled to hide their identities until later in life, suppressing their genuine emotions, or getting involved in unsatisfying, false marriages.

Coincidentally, Mendes and I share the same birth year, being born only a few months apart. I realized my sexual orientation as early as thirteen years old, identifying myself as gay.

For a number of years, I refused to acknowledge it. However, by the time I turned 19, I had accepted and understood everything. Unbeknownst to me, my younger sister revealed it during Thanksgiving dinner, which made for an uncomfortable holiday experience. Still, I was planning on telling my family about it myself in due course.

In the early 2000s, the time period when Mendes and I matured, there was a significant distinction between the United States of that era and the country we know today, as same-sex marriage and other equal rights had not yet been legally recognized at that point.

Now, the idea of making it to 26 and still living in a state of confusion strikes me as deeply sad.

Despite the increasing portrayal of LGBTQ+ narratives and personalities in Hollywood and the music industry, it’s clear that they continue to favor heterosexual icons. This is because these figures are generally more appealing to the predominantly straight audience that they cater to.

It’s possible that this issue is a contributing factor. However, it’s equally valid to say that prolonged instances of cyberbullying might have played a significant role in Mendes’s later mental state as well.

Modern society, especially the progressive left, is just too damn obsessed with identity.

Online liberals advocating for tolerance and affection may criticize individuals such as Mendes when they don’t adhere to their progressive ideals, making them a target by sharing or exposing their personal preferences that are deemed non-conforming in the public sphere.

As a follower committed to understanding societal shifts, I’ve noticed that among young progressives, there seems to be an exaggerated focus on the concept of ever-evolving personal pronouns and the creation of numerous ‘sexual identities’. This trend appears to elevate differences in sexuality to a desirable status, glorifying perceived victimhood, and transforming identity politics into a form of social currency.

This persistent and rather inappropriate fixation would inevitably foster an unhealthy environment. Celebrities such as Mendes have experienced the consequences of this.
