Why have almost all the Indiana Jones movies vanished from Disney+?

As an avid Indiana Jones fan with decades of adventures under my belt, it’s disheartening to find myself on a wild goose chase for the first four films on Disney+! It seems that the whip-cracking archaeologist himself has been lost among licensing rights and streaming agreements.

If you’re an admirer of Indiana Jones, you may need to look around because the initial four movies are no longer available on Disney+. Learn more about where to find them here!

In comparison to many other film series, none are cherished quite like Indiana Jones. For more than four decades, audiences have been captivated by the escapades of Harrison Ford portraying the iconic archaeologist. As he traversed the world in search of extraordinary artifacts, he engaged in breathtaking adventures that were crafted by the genius collaborative efforts of Steven Spielberg and George Lucas. These groundbreaking partnership led to the creation of an enduring hero whose legacy continues to thrive.

As a gamer, I’ve got to say, my favorite adventures with Indiana Jones have been woven deep into the fabric of Disney experiences for quite some time now. It all started when George Lucas, the mastermind behind Indy, had a strong bond with Disney. This friendship paved the way for Disney to incorporate the Indiana Jones movies from The Great Movie Ride to the ongoing Indiana Jones Epic Stunt Spectacular at Hollywood Studios. You can also find the iconic Disneyland ride and various attractions that bring the adventurous archaeologist right into our lives.

When Disney acquired Lucasfilm in 2012, it allowed them to utilize the Indiana Jones license. They eventually took advantage of this with the 2023 release of “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny“. Despite underperforming at the box office, it provided a fitting farewell for Harrison Ford’s timeless archaeologist character.

Initially, all five Indiana Jones movies were offered on Disney+ along with additional features. However, if you visit Disney+ and search for “Indiana Jones,” only the latest film, “Dial of Destiny,” appears. To your surprise, the other four films such as “Raiders of the Lost Ark,” “Temple of Doom,” “The Last Crusade,” and “Kingdom of the Crystal Skull” are currently missing from the platform.

In the realm of streaming, it’s always the same problem: Licensing agreements. Interestingly, all four films were created by Paramount, even though Disney now owns Lucasfilm. Despite this sale, Paramount retains control over the rights issues. Before moving to Disney+ in 2023, just before the release of Dial of Destiny, these movies were accessible on Netflix. The licensing contract has now expired, meaning that as of October 1st, these four films can be found on Paramount+. It’s possible that they could be licensed to Netflix in the future.

For enthusiasts, it’s another inconvenience and a stark reminder of why traditional media remains superior for those who prefer their favorite films not to disappear suddenly from a particular streaming platform without prior notice. There’s always hope that Disney will negotiate a new agreement to restore these movies, but at the moment, only “Dial of Destiny” is available on Disney+ for fans eager to experience this legendary character in action.
