Why Fleabag’s Two Seasons Still Haunt Fans Six Years Later
Six long years have passed since the beloved comedy series “Fleabag” concluded on Prime Video, leaving fans still yearning for more. Regrettably, it only ran for two seasons, which left many wondering about the potential storylines that could have unfolded had the series been given a chance to carry on. While Prime Video is generally less hasty in canceling shows compared to services like Netflix, it has ended some prematurely. Yet, it’s important to note that streaming services and networks aren’t always at fault for a TV show’s demise.
Occasionally, creators have a predetermined number of seasons in mind for their work. Previously, with traditional network TV, there was limited room for shows on the airwaves. Therefore, if you were fortunate enough to get your show on the air, you’d likely keep it running until they physically escorted you out of the studio. However, with streaming platforms now available, creators have more opportunities to get their shows picked up. As a result, they might not feel as pressured to prolong an acclaimed series indefinitely like they once did. I deeply wish that Fleabag continued, but I understand why Phoebe Waller-Bridge opted to bring it to a close.
It’s Been 6 Years & I’m Still Disappointed Fleabag Didn’t Get A Longer Run On Prime Video
Fleabag Only Has 12 Episodes In The Entire Show
The show titled “Fleabag” debuted in July 2016, featuring six episodes that revolve around the main character, simply known as “Fleabag.” Created by and starring Phoebe Waller-Bridge, this character is a free-spirited yet impulsive and frequently irritable young woman residing in London. Her life goals are unclear. The show often has a theatrical feel, with Fleabag speaking directly to the audience as if they were part of the play, thus breaking the conventional boundaries of storytelling.
In the series, several characters remain nameless, but Fleabag does have a family, particularly a sister named Claire (portrayed by Sian Clifford). She frequently argues with her. Throughout both seasons, Fleabag grapples with some regrettable decisions in her life and justifies those she’s proud of despite others’ disapproval. The show is a clever exploration of everyday life, masterfully performed by Waller-Bridge. Regrettably, only 12 episodes were produced across the two series, which premiered in 2019, leaving us with a limited number of installments to enjoy Fleabag’s story.
Why Fleabag Was Only 2 Seasons Despite Being A Masterpiece
Phoebe Waller-Bridge Thought That Fleabag’s Story Was Fully Told
In a surprising turn of events, the quirky show Fleabag garnered three Golden Globe nominations and won twice, boasting a perfect score on Rotten Tomatoes. Given its compact cast, unassuming settings, minimalist filming approach, and brief seasons, it’s likely that streaming giant Prime Video didn’t invest much in keeping Fleabag going. Yet, despite its widespread acclaim and success by every standard, Fleabag concluded after just two seasons. It’s reassuring to learn that Phoebe Waller-Bridge herself chose to end the show, rather than some corporate decision being made behind closed doors with numbers on a spreadsheet.
Phoebe Waller-Bridge opted to conclude ‘Fleabag’ with season 2, as she believed that moment represented the perfect time to wrap up the storyline for her character (as reported by The Hollywood Reporter). Regarding the finale, she expressed that it felt just right.
As the final credits rolled, I found myself choked up, struck by the emotional depth of this cinematic voyage. The character’s journey resonated so profoundly within me that it felt like a gentle wave washing over me. A sense of satisfaction washed over me, a quiet affirmation that we, as storytellers, had made the right choice in concluding the narrative at its perfect moment.
Waller-Bridge made an astute choice in not creating more of “Fleabag,” as it’s often problematic when a series continues beyond the point where its story has been fully told. Many excellent shows have suffered by running too long after they had already said everything they needed to say. By wrapping up Fleabag’s narrative, Waller-Bridge wisely chose to exit gracefully, ensuring that both the character and the show would be honored appropriately.
Fleabag’s Perfect Ending Almost Makes Up For Its Short Run
The Finale Is As Satisfying As An Ending Can Be
Additionally, I found the conclusion of Fleabag so fulfilling that even the suggestion of a third season makes me apprehensive, as it might tarnish an ideal ending. In the second season’s sixth episode, the wedding of Fleabag’s godmother (played by Olivia Colman) and her father (Bill Paterson) serves as the backdrop for Claire’s divorce from her abhorrent husband, the priest (Andrew Scott), who confesses his love for Fleabag but ultimately chooses to honor his religious vows. By the end of this episode, Fleabag appears unchanged in terms of external circumstances.
After two seasons filled with self-loathing, regret, and hidden feelings of pity, I have finally learned to love myself on the inside in the show Fleabag. In the final episode, though I knew I’d never be with the priest, I understood that I am worthy of love, and so I left, no longer needing my crutch to escape reality. Contentment has found me, and it makes me appreciate shows like Fleabag that conclude gracefully rather than stretching on for too long.
