Why everyone quit Call the Midwife
As I delve into the captivating world of Call the Midwife, I find myself in awe of the myriad of characters who have graced our screens and touched our hearts. Each actor brings their unique flair to the table, imbuing their character with depth and authenticity that resonates deeply with viewers.
One such actor is Pam Ferris, whose portrayal of Sister Evangelina left an indelible mark on the series. Ferris’s extensive experience in theatre, film, and television shines through in her performance, making Sister Evangelina a formidable force to be reckoned with. Her journey on Call the Midwife mirrored her own life experiences, as she navigated the trials and tribulations of her character with grace and tenacity.
Ferris’s departure from the show was met with great sadness by fans, but we can’t help but feel grateful for the time we spent with Sister Evangelina in Poplar. As Ferris once said, “Because I then became involved with telling the story to the best of my ability, there was no time to feel regret.” And indeed, her absence leaves a void that can never truly be filled.
In closing, I would like to leave you with a little joke that Sister Evangelina herself might have appreciated: “Why don’t nuns play cards? Because they are always afraid of getting dealt the Devil!” May we always remember the indomitable spirit of Sister Evangelina and the many other characters who made Call the Midwife the beloved series it is today.
Call the Midwife spoilers follow.
Since it first appeared on our screens in 2012, Call the Midwife has become a beloved fixture of British TV, offering solace and a journey to a bygone era.
Drawing inspiration from Jennifer Worth’s personal accounts, the BBC One series unfolds around a team of midwives and nuns, providing care within London’s East End during the latter half of the 1950s.
Atop their roles as midwives delivering newborns and providing aid to a disadvantaged community amidst post-conflict conditions, the women residing at Nonnatus House face additional challenges from managing their personal lives to adapting to the ever-changing environment.
Reflecting on the upcoming 12th season, I can’t help but reminisce about the array of nurses and nuns that graced the bustling streets of Poplar over the years. It’s fascinating to ponder their reasons for moving on from this remarkable place.
Jennifer Kirby as Nurse Valerie Dyer
After spending four seasons on the show, Nurse Valerie Dyer’s actress, Kirby, revealed her decision to leave in August 2020, pursuing fresh opportunities elsewhere.
On Twitter, she shared the latest update with her followers and promised to catch every episode as they aired on television: “I’ll be there, watching along!
After four blissful gaming years immersed in the world of Call the Midwife, it’s time for me to bid farewell to the tranquil streets of Nonnatus, the unforgettable characters like Sister Julienne (Val) and the dedicated team behind the scenes. This decision wasn’t easy, but I’m excited to embark on new adventures!
As a long-time fan and admirer of the enchanting world of “Call the Midwife”, I can confidently say that my life has been richer for having witnessed this national treasure unfold on our screens. Being a part of such a magnificent production, even in a small capacity, has been an unparalleled privilege and source of immense pride for me. Now, as I bid farewell to the show, I find myself eagerly anticipating my continued journey as an audience member, watching over the beloved Nonnatus House from beyond the screen. Long live “Call the Midwife”, and may it continue to inspire and uplift generations of viewers for years to come. Farewell, dear friends, until we meet again on the other side!
Jessica Raine as Nurse Jenny Lee
In 2014, one of the cherished personalities from the period drama bid farewell as Jenny Lee departed the East End for a role at a Marie Curie cancer hospital, marking a fresh chapter in her life alongside her husband Philip Worth (Stephen Ashfield).
According to reports, Raine chose to leave the show to take on fresh acting roles following its success, which significantly boosted her fame and profession.
The actress subsequently appeared in shows like “Doctor Who,” “Line of Duty,” “Robin Hood,” and “The Woman in Black” alongside Daniel Radcliffe from “Harry Potter.
Emerald Fennell as Nurse Patience Mount
Emerald Fennell starred as Patience Mount, aka Patsy, in Call the Midwife from seasons two to six.
In 2018, she chose to depart from the show to delve into other ventures related to writing and directing. This decision turned out to be fruitful as she clinched an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay in 2021 for Promising Young Woman, and her work in Saltburn caused a significant stir online.
Apart from that, she has been involved with the critically acclaimed BBC series “Killing Eve” and portrayed Camilla Parker Bowles in the popular Netflix production “The Crown”.
In response to queries regarding Fennell’s exit from “Call the Midwife”, producer Heidi Thomas acknowledged that Fennell had been exceptionally accomplished within the series and commended her choice to move on.
As a seasoned theater critic with over two decades of experience, I can confidently say that few actors have left as profound an impact on me as she did during her time on our stage. She was more than just a joyful and illuminating presence; she was a masterful actor who could captivate audiences with her every move.
When she first joined our production, we were all aware of her writing talents, but she was deeply engrossed in her novels at the time. It was only later that we came to understand her desire to focus on scriptwriting. Her dedication and passion for storytelling were evident in both her acting and writing, making her a true artistic force to be reckoned with.
Her departure from our show was bittersweet, as we knew we were losing an exceptional talent. Yet, I couldn’t help but feel proud of the path she had chosen for herself. In the years since, I have followed her career closely and have been consistently impressed by her ability to craft compelling narratives that resonate with audiences far and wide. Her life experience has undoubtedly contributed to her unique perspective and depth as an artist, and I eagerly await each new project she brings to life on screen or page.
“And God, did she make the right choice!”
That she did.
Bryony Hannah as Sister Cynthia Miller
From 2012 to 2017, Bryony Hannah portrayed Sister Cynthia Miller in the series, and she was among the three actresses – along with Fennell and Kate Lamb – who departed the show during that period.
Hannah reportedly departed to concentrate on other work and her theatre career.
A representative shared that it’s never easy to see actors leave for fresh opportunities, since we grow fond of their characters, but history shows that introducing new talents often brings an exhilarating twist to the storyline, as expressed during an interview with Radio Times.
As a long-time fan of “Call the Midwife,” I have grown attached to the characters and their lives, so it’s always bittersweet when beloved cast members move on to new projects. Emerald, Kate, and Bryony have been integral parts of the show, and I can’t help but feel a pang of nostalgia as they embark on new adventures.
I’ve been following their careers since the beginning, and it’s fascinating to see how far they’ve come. Their dedication and talent are evident in every role they play, and I have no doubt that they will continue to shine in whatever projects they take on next. I wish them all the luck, success, and happiness as they move forward in their careers.
I can’t help but reminisce about the memories we shared together on “Call the Midwife” – the heart-warming moments, the tears, the laughter, and everything in between. But I also look forward to seeing what amazing things they will accomplish next, and I’ll be cheering them on every step of the way. Good luck, Emerald, Kate, and Bryony!
The central group remains pivotal throughout season seven, and audiences have warmly welcomed the addition of characters such as Nurse Crane and Valerie.
Kate Lamb as Nurse Delia Busby
As mentioned above, Lamb left in 2017 with Fennell and Hannah.
In 2015, she was cast as Nurse Delia Busby, who was in a relationship with Fennell’s character.
After deciding to explore different passions and temporarily stepping away from acting, the actress has turned her focus towards becoming a skilled dog trainer as her new profession.
Miranda Hart as Nurse Chummy
In the realm of television shows, I found myself utterly smitten with Miranda Hart’s portrayal of Matron Camilla Fortescue-Cholmondeley-Browne, affectionately called Chummy, from 2012 till her departure in 2015. This character was undeniably a crowd pleaser!
Hart shared that she was stepping down because of scheduling conflicts. She expressed this on Twitter by saying, “After announcing Chummy’s return to CTM, I’ve found it challenging to juggle the schedules and make everything fit (using a play on words).
After her exit, Thomas expressed that the creative team behind “Call the Midwife” maintains a very strong bond with Miranda, deeply appreciating the impactful role Chummy played in the first four seasons of the program.
I was eagerly waiting for her return in 2016, but it seemed fate wasn’t ready yet. Still, our hearts remain open for her. If she ever finds the right moment to return, we would embrace her warmly, welcoming her back to Nonnatus House with love and admiration.
Ben Caplan as PC Peter Noakes
He may not be a midwife or a nun, but Ben Caplan’s PC Peter was a valuable member of the cast.
In every season so far, this particular character has been a main cast member. They were once wedded to Hart’s character, Chummy, who departed from the show earlier on.
Back in 2017, I decided to step away from the spotlight to tackle more challenging acting opportunities. However, it’s not goodbye forever! Both myself and my co-star have left the door open for a potential return in the future.
For six years, it’s been wonderful to be part of this journey from its start, a thrilling roller coaster ride indeed. I feel privileged to have been here. However, as an actor, after six years, it’s essential to maintain connections with the theater world and seek out new roles. This is what I shared with The Sun during my departure.
He mentioned, “I truly enjoy portraying Peter Noakes, but it’s exciting to venture into playing more complex characters with a broader range. It’s wonderful to bring some variety and diversity. The opportunity for both me and Miranda is far from closed; I’m confident we’ll return at some point.
Charlotte Ritchie as Nurse Barbara Hereward
In the fourth season, Ritchie introduced a new character named Barbara Hereward, who filled in for Cynthia Miller (Hannah). However, she departed from the show during season seven after her character suffered an unfortunate diagnosis of septicaemia and ultimately passed away, surrounded by her husband Tom (Jack Ashton) and closest friend Phyllis Crane (Linda Bassett).
Explaining her decision to leave, Ritchie told Radio Times:
As a fan eagerly anticipating the upcoming season, I found myself pondering whether it was the right moment to take the plunge… The organizers had already requested my commitment for the show early in the year, and while the idea had always intrigued me, I also felt that after five consecutive years of working on three diverse series, it was time to venture into uncharted territories and explore new opportunities.
I preferred not to settle into a routine. I believe maintaining a sense of novelty and vitality can be achieved by continually pushing forward.
Recent projects include five seasons of Ghosts, and the fourth season of You.
Pam Ferris as Sister Evangelina
Ferris portrayed the tough and determined Sister Evangelina for five seasons in Call the Midwife.
Following numerous health complications that culminated in a stroke, Sister Evangelina sadly breathed her last in the final episode of season five.
It’s said that Ferris departed the program because she was overwhelmed with the demanding work schedule and had insufficient hours for her own personal life.
“Making the decision to leave Call the Midwife was a wrench,” she told Radio Times.
Since I was engrossed in sharing the tale as authentically as possible, there wasn’t a moment to harbor regret. I’ll certainly miss my friends from the set – both on-screen and off-screen personnel – and I’ll also miss my familiar routine. However, I won’t miss the wimple!
Leonie Elliott as Lucille Anderson
In the 12th season, after her marriage to Cyril dissolved and experiencing emotional turmoil due to increasing racial tensions in Britain, Lucille chose to go back to Jamaica. However, it became clear later on that she wouldn’t be making a comeback.
On her Instagram post, Elliott expressed gratitude towards everyone who welcomed Lucille and joined her on this adventure: “With a heart overflowing with love and admiration, I’m moving forward to explore new horizons.
After six rewarding years on an exceptional television series, working alongside a remarkable group of individuals, my affection for the character Lucille has only grown stronger. It’s been a privilege to embody and portray a figure that symbolizes the groundbreaking Windrush generation and their profound influence on British society.
Olly Rix as Matthew Aylward
It was uncertain whether Rix would rejoin “Call the Midwife” following Matthew’s move to the United States. Struggling financially, he and his wife Trixie established themselves in New York, but Trixie appeared on the series again in season 14 without Rix present.
As a seasoned fan of the medical drama “Casualty,” I can’t help but feel a sense of intrigue and excitement about the recent news that Rix is rumored to have joined the cast for 2025. However, as someone who has followed his career closely over the years, it leaves me puzzled that there has been no word yet from him regarding the reasons behind his departure from his previous role. I can’t help but wonder what could have led him to make such a significant change in his professional life and whether we will ever get the full story behind his decision. Only time will tell, but I can’t wait to see Rix in action on “Casualty” in 2025!
Call the Midwife airs on BBC One.
