Be warned, major spoilers ahead for The Pitt season 2, episode 14, “8:00 P.M.”! After building anticipation, The Pitt season 2 has finally revealed Dr. Al-Hashimi’s secret, and it seems others were already aware of it.
Sepideh Moafi, known from The Deuce, joins the new season of the popular HBO Max medical drama as Dr. Baran Al-Hashimi. She’s a former VA doctor brought in to temporarily replace Dr. Robby (played by Noah Wyle) while he’s on leave. This season, Dr. Al-Hashimi clashes with Dr. Robby and some of the residents, and also struggles with a personal issue, experiencing moments of freezing and detachment while treating patients.
Everything leads to the season 2 finale of The Pitt, episode 14, “8:00 P.M.”. In the episode, after quickly scheduling a doctor’s appointment at the Pittsburgh Neuroscience Group, she asks Robby for his thoughts on a patient with a 30-year history of seizures, which began after a childhood case of viral meningitis. Robby realizes the case actually involves Baran, but the episode ends before he can fully process this discovery.
As the season comes to a close, ScreenRant’s Grant Hermanns spoke with Sepideh Moafi about season 2 of The Pitt. When asked why her character, Dr. Al-Hashimi, confided in Dr. Robby about her seizures, Moafi explained that she wanted to reveal a vulnerable side of herself to Wyle’s character, hoping to build a deeper connection and also because she valued his judgment.
Despite working hard all season to impress Dr. Robby, she admitted she hasn’t been able to connect with his compassionate side. She believes he’s very closed off to her, so she’s had to try a completely different approach to reach him.
Sepideh Moafi’s character questions if she can connect with him through their shared pain, recognizing a common vulnerability in both of them. She hopes this shared experience might actually draw them closer together.
Throughout the second season of The Pitt, the relationship between Dr. Al-Hashimi and Dr. Robby has been constantly evolving. It started off strained, as Dr. Robby initially didn’t trust Dr. Al-Hashimi to take over his responsibilities while he was away. This lack of trust sometimes led to intense disagreements, like when Dr. Al-Hashimi dealt with the uncertain situation surrounding Supriya Ganesh’s Dr. Mohan, and when she kept Langdon’s rehab stay and medication use private.
Despite their initial tension, Dr. Al-Hashimi and Dr. Robby have shown increasing respect for each other throughout season 2 of The Pitt. This is evident in how they collaborate on patient cases and guide the fellows and residents. Viewers have even begun to speculate about a possible prior relationship, wondering if they dated or knew each other before Dr. Al-Hashimi joined the hospital at the beginning of the season.
How Al-Hashimi confided in Robby about her health condition will likely cause significant tension in season 2 of The Pitt. Similar to the issues with Langdon’s return to the hospital after battling addiction, Wyle’s character might question Moafi’s ability to handle the job and attempt to take over while Moafi is on leave.
The season 2 finale trailer for The Pitt hinted at a conflict between Robby and Baran regarding her job. With a full hour left in the season, and Robby’s future still uncertain—especially after he confided in Duke about his struggles with suicidal thoughts and his reliance on the hospital—their argument might lead him to decide against taking his sabbatical and remain at the hospital.
I’m really hoping that season 2 of The Pitt wraps up with Robby making the choice to be there for Al-Hashimi, supporting her as she works with her doctor on her seizures. It would be such a nice change of pace for his character, giving him a genuinely happy moment after a pretty tough season. And it would set up a really compelling emotional journey for Al-Hashimi as we head into season 3, giving her a solid foundation to build from. I think it would be a beautiful way to end things for both of them.
