Why Downton Abbey 3 has to give a “full and proper conclusion” to the series
In simple terms, Gareth Neame, the producer of Downton Abbey, has disclosed the reason behind providing a complete and fitting ending in the third movie.
In late 2021, the classic series Downton Abbey will conclude its run with the special episode titled “Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale“. This installment chronicles the journey of the Crawley family and their staff as they adapt to change and anticipate the future in 1930s England.
After revealing the first official trailer a few days ago, excitement for the upcoming movie is growing before its expected September premiere. Neame elaborated on their decision to produce three movies instead, following six seasons of TV series.

He expressed his consistent optimism about it, stating that the TV show seemed extremely movie-like and could thrive in theaters. During a Golden Globes panel discussion (as reported by Variety), he added that the shorter production time for a film compared to a series was another appealing aspect.
It was a sensible method to continue the storyline of ‘Downton’. However, we don’t intend to do this indefinitely. We didn’t want the franchise or ‘Downton Abbey’ to simply stop. Instead, we aimed for a satisfying conclusion.
For enthusiasts of “Downton Abbey”, the finale [referred to as “The Grand Finale“] serves as a complete and fitting end to the tales of each character, according to Neame, who was responsible for creating all 52 episodes of the show as well as its trilogy of films.
In the teaser, Neame isn’t the only one hinting at elements of the movie. Previously, actor Hugh Bonneville revealed details about Robert Crawley’s storyline, stating: “As for my character, I believe the standard [development] will occur, which is that he’s a type of dinosaur struggling to move towards the future, albeit unwillingly.
Robert appears to be acknowledging that things are shifting now – it’s high time to advance the plotline, if I may say so. It retains the traditional elements, such as excitement and drama, but with a Downton Abbey-like twist, which essentially means a tea cup might get knocked over!
I believe this latest installment of the film series will undoubtedly surpass its predecessors due to the abundance of warmth, excitement, and fresh surprises. Rest assured, I won’t reveal the new twists, but trust me – it’s been 14 years since we began in 2010, and I’m still amazed at where we are now, producing a third film.
Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale is scheduled to be released in cinemas on 12 September.
