Allison Mack is speaking out about her time with NXIVM, a group that was later revealed to be a sex-trafficking cult. In a new seven-part podcast called Allison After NXIVM, the former actress shares her experiences within the organization and also briefly reflects on her role in the TV show Smallville. Mack reveals that her Smallville co-star, Kristin Kreuk, was the one who initially introduced her to NXIVM.
Kristin Kreuk and Allison Mack both started on Smallville in its first season, playing Lana Lang and Chloe Sullivan. They were both teenagers at the time and these roles proved to be huge breaks for their careers. In the first episode of Allison After NXIVM (available on YouTube), Mack remembers becoming close friends with Kreuk while working on the show. They spent time together, even going on vacation, and realized they were experiencing similar personal struggles.
Looking back, my friend and I really lived. We traveled the world together – Syria, Turkey, Mongolia, and especially Paris. Paris became our place; we’d go back again and again, spending days lost in museums, browsing shops, and just soaking up the atmosphere with a glass of rosé overlooking the city from the Pompidou Centre. It felt like a dream. We were both in our mid-twenties, living in New York City, and honestly, it should have been perfect. We even shared an apartment building in the West Village. But despite all that, we found ourselves asking a really unsettling question: why weren’t we happy?
As a film buff, I was really fascinated listening to this actress talk about her early days. She mentioned how, back then, both she and a co-star seemed to have it all – great relationships, everything going for them. But surprisingly, she felt this strange sense of something missing, like an odd emptiness. Eventually, they heard about this life-coaching course a bunch of actors in Vancouver were taking, and it turned out to be run by NXIVM – the group led by Keith Raniere, way back in ’98. Her co-star ended up trying it out, and apparently, she shared what it was like with the actress, who was talking about it on a podcast.
She kept bringing it up – she was really enthusiastic about this program. She mentioned her coach and referred to Keith and Nancy, the co-founder, as ‘Vanguard’ and ‘Prefect.’ Kristin told me about an organization Keith had started specifically for women, a weekend-long event, and thought I’d enjoy it. I basically said I’d consider it if it seemed like a good fit for me.
As details emerged about Allison Mack’s involvement with NXIVM, Kristin Kreuk issued a statement addressing her own connections to the organization. She explained that she had left NXIVM around five years earlier and had initially joined what she believed to be a self-help course called Executive Success Programs. Kreuk firmly denied claims that she was involved in the organization’s inner circle or that she recruited women into any form of sexual exploitation.
Mack’s role was more significant, as she confessed to a close relationship – both personal and professional – with Keith Raniere. Within the group, she recruited young women and then treated them as her slaves. During an interview, Mack described feeling powerful over these women, even comparing herself to a dictator. She also played a key role in shaping the group’s practices, including how members were branded.
As a movie fan, I was shocked when I heard about Allison Mack’s arrest back in 2018. She was charged with some really serious crimes – sex trafficking and forced labor. Eventually, she admitted guilt to racketeering charges and the judge sentenced her to three years in prison. Thankfully, she was released a bit early in 2023. Before she started her sentence, though, she did issue an apology for everything she’d done, which I think a lot of people were waiting for.
Kristin Kreuk hasn’t publicly discussed her involvement with NXIVM, but she appears in the HBO Max docuseries The Vow, which explores the group. It’s currently unclear if she will address recent statements made by Allison Mack.
