In the climactic scenes of Ryan Coogler’s 2025 period vampire horror, the actress Wunmi Mosaku as a sinner delves into the actions of Michael B. Jordan’s character, Smoke. This movie, set in Prohibition-era Chicago and the Mississippi Delta, follows twin brothers Stack and Smoke, portrayed by Jordan, who return home after surviving war and urban crime, only to encounter nightmares of an undead nature. The cast of Sinners includes Jordan as Smoke and his on-screen twin, both of whom come back to their hometown following harrowing experiences in Chicago, but instead of finding peace, they encounter supernatural terrors.

In an open conversation with The Hollywood Reporter, Sinners star Mosaku explained why Smoke opted to spare Stack rather than ending his suffering, as he had done with Annie (Mosaku) when she was bitten. She shared that Smoke’s decision to give Annie a proper burial reflected his commitment to upholding everything she represented in life. Furthermore, Mosaku expressed her belief that Stack’s new existence would not interfere with how he wanted to live moving forward. Annie expressed that this [vampiric] existence is evil. They can’t experience the sun or enjoy the beauty of dawn, nor can they reunite with their ancestors, which Annie believes is an integral part of a balanced and moral order. For her, living eternally on earth amidst strife, suffering, and sorrow, is not something she desires.

In essence, Smoke destroyed Annie because her vampire existence contradicted everything she stood for and desired. Although Stack has transformed, he remains the same person; simply altered into a different form. I don’t think Smoke killed Stack, as he trusted Stack to uphold his commitment regarding Sammie. Stack is now able to spend eternity with Mary, his beloved, which is what both of them had wished for. In every moment, Smoke is granting their desires and prayers.

In Mosaku’s response, there’s a strong connection to one of the main ideas in Sinners, which is the significant role of freedom as a unifying concept among characters. For instance, Smoke and Stack strive to establish a sanctuary for the Black community devoid of the prejudice that permeates their existence, while Sammie (Miles Caton) seeks self-determination through his music. Remmick, although he has lost personal freedom, embodies a violation of freedom, as his vision of an egalitarian society through vampirism is distorted and self-centered, using others’ lives for his own advantage, turning them into his thralls.

In essence, although Annie’s destiny is sorrowful, it might be considered a more favorable one when weighed against what she could have experienced under Remmick. If Remmick had prevailed, Annie would have been an affront to everything she stood for, and her reunion with the child she shared with Smoke might have been prevented. As a result, it is evident that despite both choices being painful for Smoke, he made decisions aimed at granting his loved ones their deepest desires.
