Why did Seasmoke choose Addam of Hull on House of the Dragon?

As a devoted fan of “House of the Dragon,” I couldn’t help but be captivated by the latest episode’s intriguing turn of events involving Rhaenyra Targaryen and her dragon, Seasmoke. The scene where Seasmoke chooses a new rider, Addam of Hull, left me on the edge of my seat with anticipation and excitement.

In the recent installment of “House of the Dragon,” titled “Smallfolk,” Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen (Emma D’Arcy) endeavors to discover new riders for the untamed dragons residing on her base, Dragonstone. Her trusted Kingsguard knight, Steffon Darklyn (Anthony Flanagan), attempts to climb aboard Seasmoke, the dragon previously ridden by Rhaenyra’s late husband Laenor Velaryon (John Macmillan). However, his effort fails disastrously as Seasmoke cooks Steffon instead. With this unfortunate incident, it seems that Rhaenyra’s plans to expand her dragon-riding squad may have hit a dead end.

Later on, Seasmoke decides to travel to Driftmark in pursuit of a young shipwright named Addam from Hull (Clinton Liberty). He relentlessly tracks down Addam across the island and eventually corners him against a rock. Although we don’t witness the encounter’s outcome, we discover at the episode’s conclusion that Seasmoke has acquired a new rider – none other than Addam himself. (For those who have read George R.R. Martin’s book “Fire & Blood,” there is no need to maintain any ambiguity regarding this matter.)

But why did Seasmoke seek Addam out? Let’s get into it.

Addam reminds Seasmoke of his last rider

In the past, Laenor Velaryon, who was previously Seasmoke’s rider, deceived everyone by feigning his own death along with Rhaenyra’s in the first season. He did this to escape and be with his lover Qarl Correy (Arty Froushan) on Essos. Unfortunately, he left Seasmoke behind at Driftmark. It’s a bit harsh to abandon a dragon, but considering that having such a companion with him would have attracted unwanted attention in Essos, I can understand why he made that choice.

Seasmoke, the dragon once ridden by Laenor, now stands alone and desolate. It’s possible that Laenor may have passed away unseen, leading to Seasmoke’s melancholic state. (In “Fire & Blood,” it is confirmed that Laenor does indeed die, eliminating any ambiguity.)

Laenor, played by Steve Toussaint’s character Corlys Velaryon, and Addam, portrayed by Abubakar Salim as Alyn Velaryon, share the same father despite being born to different mothers – Rhaenys Targaryen (Eve Best) and an unknown woman in the case of Addam. Thus, they are half-brothers, although they may have never crossed paths.

Seasmoke was drawn to Addam since there are striking resemblances between them and Addam’s bloodline, which is akin to that of Laenor, Seasmoke’s former rider whom he deeply misses. Although Addam has black hair instead of Laenor’s silver-white, the similarities are noticeable. Seasmoke perceived Steffon Darklyn as an intruder, but with Addam, there was a sense of familiarity – making it possible for Addam to ride the mighty dragon.

We didn’t directly witness that event unfold, but I’m excited to discover more as “House of the Dragon” progresses on HBO and Max every Sunday evening.
