Why did Sam go static in The Boroughs’ finale? The Netflix series’ mysterious ending, explained

The Boroughs ending spoilers follow.

Netflix’s new sci-fi series, The Boroughs, isn’t just similar to Stranger Things with an older cast. It takes the everyday experience of getting older and explores it in a magical, heartwarming, and intriguing way, focusing on characters like Sam (Alfred Molina), Judy (Alfre Woodard), Art (Clarke Peters), Wally (Denis O’Hare), and Renee (Geena Davis).

This group of lively, independent, and sometimes grumpy retirees finds themselves caught up in a strange mystery surrounding The Boroughs when newcomer Sam sees his neighbor, Jack (Bill Pullman), brutally attacked and killed by a monster in the very first episode.

Seven episodes later, Sam and his friends find themselves in a desperate fight to stop the strange and dangerous events happening throughout the city. But how does their story conclude?

The real threat isn’t the monsters themselves, but the people controlling them. Blaine and Anneliese, who manage the Boroughs, are secretly forcing the monsters to drain fluid from people’s brains. They’re doing this to feed ‘Mother,’ the most powerful monster of them all.

So, apparently, this group – her closest friends and family – would actually drink the Mother’s blood. Seriously! They believed it would keep them young and basically make them immortal. It’s kind of like that movie Death Becomes Her, but way more disturbing and gross, honestly.

What to Read Next

If you’re following the story, you’ll know the clever group of elderly rebels succeeded. They rescued Mother from where she was held captive and defeated Anneliese and several of her close allies.

Everyone believed Blaine was dead, killed in the same explosion that took Anneliese’s life. But when he unexpectedly returned seeking revenge, Mother instantly destroyed him. Sam, who had just fought with Blaine in the Cave of Wonders before the explosion, survived without a scratch. Though he was physically okay, something about him seemed… different.

As the season closes, Sam examines a cut on his forehead in the mirror. Suddenly, his reflection glitches, resembling static on a television screen. This is the same strange effect seen with Blaine and Anneliese after they were exposed to the monster-fighting device Sam built from old TVs.

But what does it all mean?

Why did Sam’s reflection glitch static at the end of The Boroughs?

As mentioned above, the finale isn’t the first time that we see characters go all static.

Everyone recalls the shocking moment Kayleigh (Beth Bailey), the Boroughs’ welcoming representative, was affected by Sam’s device while his daughter, Claire (Jena Malone), watched. It turned out Kayleigh was also consuming the monster blood.

Mom also communicated with Sam by appearing as Lilly, the deceased wife of the grieving engineer (played by Jane Kaczmarek). She would appear as static, like a broken TV signal. Whenever a character becomes distorted with static on the show, it always connects to something supernatural.

Could it be that, while defeating Blaine, Mother transferred some kind of supernatural power to Sam? We know she was thankful to him for rescuing her – saving her from being exploited and drained, and also protecting her children from the same fate.

When Mother dies, taking her children and anyone reliant on her blood with her, she grants Sam a final vision of his wife. This offered him peace, but did she also leave him with something else, perhaps unintentionally?

Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews, the creators of The Boroughs, recently explained the show’s puzzling ending in an interview with Netflix’s Tudum. They discussed what inspired the finale and offered some clues about why Sam was glitching.

Addiss said the scene was a nod to Stranger Things, specifically referencing the moment in the first season finale where Will Byers vomits up a slug.

Just like Will suffered unexpected problems after being in the Upside Down, Sam’s strange behavior suggests he might be experiencing consequences from his time in the Cave of Wonders.

Matt and Ross Duffer, the creators of Stranger Things, advised them to wrap up each season with a satisfying conclusion while still leaving possibilities for future storylines. They emphasized the importance of completing a story arc for emotional impact, but cautioned against overplanning, as the show’s direction could change.

We’ve noticed Sam’s glitch is unique compared to what others have experienced. It doesn’t seem to be caused by external interference, and strangely, it only affects his reflection, not him directly. This suggests whatever is causing the problem is working differently for Sam.

It’s too early to know if The Boroughs will be renewed for a second season, as it just premiered. However, fans are hoping this bold and unapologetic group of characters returns to reveal more about what happens to Sam.
