Why did Jennifer Love Hewitt leave Criminal Minds after one season?

As a long-time fan who’s seen Jennifer Love Hewitt grace our screens in some of my favorite shows, I was thrilled when she joined the cast of Criminal Minds. But alas, her stint was shorter than expected, much like a box of chocolates on a hot day!

It’s clear that fans of “I Know What You Did Last Summer” and “Ghost Whisperer” eagerly anticipated Jennifer Love Hewitt’s addition to the cast of “Criminal Minds.” However, contrary to initial expectations, she only appeared for a single season.

In the BAU, Hewitt assumed the character of Kate Callahan and swiftly built connections, garnering backing from her peers. What’s more, Hewitt expressed enthusiasm about embracing a role distinct from any she had tackled in her previous acting endeavors.

In the final episode of Criminal Minds Season 9, I, Alex Blake, stepped down from the team, leaving room for a newcomer named Callahan. It seemed like she was here to stay, but fate had other plans. By the time we reached the Season 10 finale, Callahan’s tenure with us came to an end as well, when a case hit close to home. Her beloved niece Meg was kidnapped by human traffickers.

Why Kate Callahan resigned from the BAU in Criminal Minds

In the plot, Callahan started to ponder over her tenure with the team. This wasn’t about disliking the work or her colleagues, but rather concerns about safety and spending quality time with family.

Towards the conclusion of Season 10, Callahan discovered she was expecting a child. With Meg in peril, Callahan felt compelled to depart from the team and devote more attention to her loved ones.

She was never seen again in the series.

Jennifer Love Hewitt left Criminal Minds due to pregnancy

It transpired that Hewitt herself decided to leave, and this decision was driven by private matters. Given that she was expecting her second child, Hewitt opted to step away temporarily to focus on her expanding family, ensuring she could provide them with undivided attention during this significant time.

Originally, this ending wasn’t intended; instead, as revealed by CBR, the finale was crafted to incorporate Callahan’s departure. Initially, it was planned that Hewitt would continue on the series for a longer period.

Aisha Tyler joining the series following Hewitt’s departure has an element of poetic symmetry, given that they were co-stars on the first season of “Ghost Whisperer.” It feels fitting and seamless, almost as if it were a carefully orchestrated move in Hollywood.
