Why did Gary Young leave the band Pavement?

Currently, Pavement is experiencing a resurgence. A biopic or concert movie about them is being made, where actual band members are replaced by actors portraying their younger versions. This production is witty, intelligent, and true to the band’s indie-slacker image.

Considering the recent resurgence of interest towards Pavement, it seems like an ideal moment to explore one of the band’s lesser-known members – Gary Young. As their drummer, he was part of the group for a span of five years and played an essential role in their transformation from unknown acts to celebrated Gen-X icons. However, his departure followed shortly after this period, and we aim to shed light on the reasons behind it.

1989 saw Gary Young become one of the original members of Pavement. Upon hearing Stephen Malkmus’s lyrics, he was astounded and is famously quoted as saying: “The so-called ‘Malkmus idiot’ is a true songwriting genius.” For a short while, Young was replaced by Jason Turner, but Malkmus didn’t click with the newcomer. Consequently, Young was welcomed back to the band.

Gary Young was fired in 1993

During their initial phase, Young gained a reputation for his quirky behavior. It’s said that he would welcome fans at the door before each concert, and occasionally distribute vegetables among them. Regrettably, the relationship between Young and the rest of the band deteriorated by 1993. He was eventually let go from the band, with drummer Steve West taking his place instead.

The primary cause mentioned initially was creative disagreements; however, Young’s alcoholism and his aversion towards Pavement’s recording label were the most significant factors contributing to the behind-the-scenes turmoil. Scott Kannberg, the band’s guitarist, revealed to Stocktonia that the drummer’s unpredictable behavior likely wouldn’t have allowed him to stay for an extended period.

According to Kannberg, it’s sad to say, but we couldn’t have continued with him. If he had remained in the band, I believe he wouldn’t have survived. However, he did express admiration for Young’s musical abilities.

Young briefly reunited with the band in 2010

Today, we bid farewell to Gary Young, whose rhythm on the drums was a “one-take wonder” and nailed it perfectly. Rest in peace, Gary.

Kannberg observed that he had a unique ability to contribute our songs. He seemed to originate from the progressive Yes and Zappa realm, and it appears he aimed to incorporate some of that into his work. This resulted in an intriguing contrast when combined with our new-wave punk-inspired tunes, creating a palpable tension within them. Despite any potential friction, Young never held grudges against the band, and surprisingly, he reconnected with them to perform together for two concerts in 2010.

I was deeply saddened to learn that Gary Young, a legendary drummer whose work I admired for years, passed away on August 17, 2023 at the age of 70. Malkmus, the songwriter who I’ve always respected, took to social media to express his condolences. He wrote, “Today, we lost Gary Young. His street drums were ‘one take and hit record.’ He nailed it so perfectly. Rest in peace.
