Why did Curt Smith leave Tears for Fears (and why did he return)?

Tears for Fears were among the most influential pop duos during the 1980s. Their first three albums ruled the airwaves on both sides of the ocean, and unlike many contemporaries, they continue to be a vibrant musical force today. However, it’s important to note that their journey wasn’t without its obstacles.

As a devoted fan, I can share that Curt Smith, one-half of the iconic duo Tears for Fears and the captivating voice behind many of their timeless hits, parted ways towards the end of the ’80s. The reason for his departure was his growing discontent with Roland Orzabal’s increasingly dominant influence on Tears for Fears, particularly in shaping the musical direction of their album “The Seeds of Love.

Curt Smith officially quit the band in 1990

Previously, Smith contributed as a co-writer alongside his singing responsibilities. However, due to Orzabal’s musical innovations and his own inclination towards singing, Smith’s role significantly reduced. He took on co-lead vocals for the album’s main single and handled solo performances on one more track. Yet, for the remainder of the album, he was confined to playing bass and providing backup vocals.

At the same period he was having disagreements with Orzabal, Smith’s personal life was deteriorating as well. During the production of The Seeds of Love, his divorce occurred, which gave Orzabal more control in the studio. To add fuel to the fire, they clashed over their manager, Paul King, further straining their relationship.

In this scenario, Smith found it difficult to dismiss King because his own business, Outlaw Agency, was struggling financially at the time. However, Orzabal advocated for King’s removal. Unfortunately, King declared bankruptcy in 1990 and later faced fraud charges. Coincidentally, Smith decided to leave Tears for Fears in the same year.

Smith reunited with Roland Orzabal in 2004

After keeping the name Tears for Fears, Orzabal published two more albums during the 1990s. Unfortunately, neither album made a significant impact. However, remarkably, Smith and Orzabal reconnected in the 21st century and produced a comeback album titled “Everybody Loves a Happy Ending” in 2004. In an interview with Vulture, Smith acknowledged that he appreciated the unique musical connection he shared with Orzabal, and he deeply missed it.

The musician pointed out that we’re stronger united than separated, and something special occurs when we’re in each other’s company. However, it required quite a bit of time for both of us to accept this truth, which is why there was a separation, and ultimately, my departure.

Over the following ten years, the pair persisted in their endeavors, yet encountered another hurdle in 2017 after the passing of Orzabal’s spouse. Despite this setback, their bond remained unbroken, and Orzabal acknowledged Smith’s significant role in assisting him to recover, stay productive, and produce fresh music. In conversation with the Guardian, he shared that during sessions for their latest album, 2022’s “The Tipping Point”, they reverted back to being carefree 18-year-olds at Smith’s place.

Despite facing challenges and difficulties like any other band, Tears for Fears have remarkably persevered through their issues, maintaining their popularity globally. An unexpectedly positive impact, given their rather melancholic name.
