Why Death in Paradise’s shocking Commissioner Selwyn’s exit could be the best thing for the show

As Sterling Fox, the new Commissioner, strolled into Saint Marie, a shiver of apprehension swept through the fan base of “Death in Paradise.

Could we really be losing THE Selwyn Patterson?

Fox’s overconfidence swiftly dispelled everyone’s apprehensions, while Catherine (Élizabeth Bourgine) stood by her friend, boosting Selwyn’s spirit and inspiring him to compete for his position in the force. Indeed, it proved successful.

In the Paraverse, I cheered as order was restored, with Selwyn regaining his position after a period of uncertainty. But then, during the climactic finale, my beloved character from Warrington’s series let out a chilling phrase to Catherine that sent shockwaves through the fandom – everything seemed amiss once more.

He indicated he wouldn’t be around any longer, he shared. As she met his gaze and noticed the ticking taxi with its meter running, it became clear to her, much like the understanding of many spectators, that his statement was not solely about the drink she had extended.

She deduced that he wouldn’t take up the offer for the Commissioner role; this is why Selwyn expressed his feelings by saying, “I found it hard to agree. There have been too many events, and at the moment, I can’t envision a path back to how things used to be.

As I discovered later on, it turned out that he planned to visit his daughter, Genesis Lynea, also known as Andrina. Beyond that point, the future remained a mystery: “Who can say?

He urged Catherine to take care of herself and his old team, and in response, she requested that he assure her this wasn’t goodbye, but rather a temporary ‘see you later.’

Goodbye for now, my friend,” he said, giving her a peck on the cheek. However, his ambiguous promise to come back won’t provide much solace to the audience, as they watched him get into the cab and disappear around the corner.

In brief, he briefly stopped at Mervin on his journey to share some unexpected news – which is quite another tale, and one we eagerly anticipate unfolding further.

For now though, what of Selwyn?

Commissioner Selwyn of Warrington has consistently been a beloved figure since the premiere of “Death in Paradise,” and fans’ affection for him remains unwavering. Not just a reliable presence on the Saint Marie police force, Warrington also appears to play a similar role off-screen. Numerous cast members, both past and present, have commended his dedication and consider him as both friend and collaborator.

Over the last 14 years, Selwyn has played an essential role in our franchise, making it hard to imagine any episode without his sharp humor, steady leadership, and deep affection.

And yet, his absence may take Death in Paradise into a new and exciting direction.

Initially, when the primary detective, portrayed by Ben Miller, left his position in 2013, many viewers found it hard to believe that the BBC crime series could continue without him, especially for another 11 seasons and additional detectives. Yet, each new detective introduced a unique brand of humor, consistently revitalizing the show with a fresh dose of comedy.

Over the years, various key figures have joined and departed from the Saint Marie police force – among them are Florence Cassell (Joséphine Jobert), Camille Bordey (Sara Martins), Fidel Best (Gary Carr), and Dwayne Myers (Danny John-Jules). This long-running series may appear steady and unchanging, but in reality, it has consistently adapted and transformed.

The show “Death in Paradise” is consistently evolving to maintain its mystery, adapting to suit the unique characters that join the cast.

As a gamer, I find Selwyn’s departure to be more of a subtle goodbye, leaving the door wide open for Warrington. It seems like he might reappear in Season 15, but there’s also a chance he could make a cameo in the next season to give his farewell a definitive touch.

It’s unlikely that we won’t encounter him again; au revoir is more like a see you later, not goodbye.

Should Warrington choose to go on a well-earned vacation or even permanently leave the show, “Death in Paradise” will not merely endure. Instead, it will flourish and continue to prosper as it has always done.

The essence of reinvention lies at the heart of a good murder mystery, making it likely that those responsible for its creation will transform this unfortunate event into a captivating spectacle, offering viewers an experience they didn’t realize they were eagerly anticipating.

Death in Paradise and Beyond Paradise both air on BBC One and stream on BBC iPlayer.
