Why Death in Paradise’s massive bombshell could completely change the show
Death in Paradise season 14 episode 1 spoilers follow.
As a devoted fan, I must say that the debut episode of Death in Paradise’s season 14 hit me like a surprise wave. The introduction of a fresh recruit, Benjamin (Anthony J Abraham), through his motivational and heartwarming social media post was truly captivating. However, the abrupt twist of his untimely demise left me reeling – it felt downright cruel!
Expected, as the show is always front-loaded with murder, but still hard to watch.
As I watched the episode unfold, little did I know that I was about to experience one of the most heart-wrenching moments in the entire series. But as the storyline progressed, it became increasingly clear that this wasn’t just another ordinary episode – it was a rollercoaster ride of emotions.
Later in the episode, after the unfortunate event involving Benjamin, Detective Mervin Wilson, who had been reluctant to accept the island position, discovered more about the circumstances surrounding his mother’s demise.
In response to learning about his mother’s unfortunate drowning at sea, Mervin held back tears that persistently remained unshed, and he struggled to compose himself for an extended period, revealing his emotional fragility. This poignant moment was portrayed exceptionally well by Gilet, with a unique mix of restrained affection.
In the closing scenes of the program, it was then that the most significant revelation occurred, and it wasn’t just Benjamin’s mother’s heartrending response to discovering he was slain by her other son. No, what we’re referring to is the shocking announcement JP (Toby Bakare) made to Commissioner Selwyn Patterson (Don Warrington).
Before leaving for Jamaica once more, JP informed the Commissioner of plans to restructure operations at Saint Marie’s Police Headquarters. To provide more clarity, he explained to his former superior: “The Commissioner’s role is being eliminated from the new setup.
Warrington’s astonished face matched ours, as he softly shook his head in incredulity, muttering a sincere thank you to JP for informing him and hastening him towards the airport to board his flight.
Warrington looked just as surprised as we were, nodding disbelievingly while expressing gratitude to JP for the update and urging him to hurry to the airport and catch his plane.
Afterward, a palpable sense of weight seemed to hang in the air, a feeling shared not only by the Commissioner but also by fans, as they pondered over how Saint Marie’s police force might continue functioning without Selwyn.
With Mervin being the main detective, there’s now no superior officer for him to report to. This means there’s no one to defy or rebel against, nor anyone he needs to prove himself to. The lack of this power dynamic might diminish the intriguing tension that viewers have grown accustomed to in the series.
If additional challenges don’t push him over the edge, the Commissioner’s resignation might signal Warrington’s departure from the show. It’s hard to imagine civilian Selwyn lounging at Catherine’s Bar all day with a rum and coke. A lack of active cases could drive him up the wall.
Is it possible that Selwyn is going somewhere to offer his skills, implying that Don Warrington might no longer be part of Death in Paradise?
In a conversation with Radio Times, Warrington mentioned that Selwyn’s storyline this season is quite distressing. He explained that Selwyn’s life is being flipped on its head, and despite the challenges, he has to face the harsh truth because it’s something beyond his control.
When inquired about potential consequences possibly causing him to leave, Warrington responded: “Perhaps. Life has its surprises, after all.
Commissioner Selwyn, who has been with “Death in Paradise” from the start, may be seeking new experiences as an actor, but it’s tough to imagine the show without his charisma.
The Commissioner isn’t just known for his stern appearance and imposing demeanor, hiding a compassionate heart beneath; rather, he serves as the bedrock for a series that frequently swaps out main detectives. This is partly due to the stability and continuity that Warrington contributes to the show.
Let’s hope it is not the end of the road for Selwyn just yet.
Death in Paradise and its spin-off, Beyond Paradise, both air on BBC One and stream on BBC iPlayer.
