The popular series Peaky Blinders is continuing as a movie, titled The Immortal Man, which picks up the story right after the show’s finale in 2022. Cillian Murphy recently shared his reasons for returning to the role, even though he loved how the TV series concluded.
Cillian Murphy, who plays Tommy Shelby, told Deadline that they had extensive conversations about the purpose and justification for making a film, emphasizing the need for a compelling reason to revisit the story.
He explained that they had been developing the script, going through many drafts and revisions, since around 2019-2020.

I thought the movie really needed a good reason to be made. I especially loved the ending of season 6, with Tommy riding off into the countryside – it left you wondering what happened to him and if he’d ever return, and I wanted the film to honor that feeling.
“I felt that was a satisfying ending, actually, for the TV show.”

Murphy explained that any film adaptation needed to be as good as, or even better than, the original source material.
“The series is always so cinematic, but I felt like we had to open it up more.”
As a huge Peaky Blinders fan, I was really excited to hear Steven Knight wanted to make a movie! He’s said a big reason was to finally show the Peaky Blinders during wartime. With a bigger budget, he can really show us what life was like back then, instead of just having the characters talk about it – and that sounds amazing!

It was like, imagine playing a game where every single night the map is just getting absolutely destroyed by bombs – that’s what Birmingham was like during the Blitz. Seriously, every night felt like a total gamble – you just didn’t know if you’d make it through.
My mother was there to share her experiences, and she described how frightening it was. I really wanted to capture that intense feeling of World War II and immerse my characters in it.
The new Peaky Blinders film, ‘The Immortal Man’, will hit theaters on March 6th and will be available to stream on Netflix starting March 20th. You can currently watch the complete Peaky Blinders series on both Netflix and BBC iPlayer.
