Why Captain America: Brave New World’s divisive credit scene was added late to the movie

Director Julius Onah of the movie “Captain America: Brave New World” has shared the reason behind the inclusion of the controversial post-credit sequence, which was added to the film at a later stage.

In this disputed sequence, affectionately labeled as the “most problematic” post-credits moment so far, we find Anthony Mackie’s character Sam Wilson making an unusual jail visit to Tim Blake Nelson’s Samuel Sterns, famously known as The Leader, who is confined within a heavily fortified penitentiary called The Raft.

As a dedicated admirer, I find myself relaying a critical message from Sterns: “Prepare yourself, Wilson. An ominous danger approaches from beyond our universe, and certain unknown adversaries are lurking. Let’s see how well you defend this realm against them.

In a conversation with Collider, Onah disclosed that the post-credit sequence wasn’t incorporated until after the Writers Guild of America (WGA) strike had concluded. This allowed Marvel sufficient time to align the scene with upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) ventures.

Onah clarified that the scene we’re looking at was filmed during our supplementary shoots,” he said. “This highlights the fact that everything has been meticulously planned out beforehand. At that point, we hadn’t figured out what our end-credit sequence would be, as you might recall there was a big writers’ strike happening, which meant no new scripts were being written not just for this movie but across all film and television productions.

He went on to explain: “Nothing was definite at that point. Therefore, it wasn’t clear what ‘Thunderbolts’ would eventually become or what the next ‘Avengers’ movie might shape up to be. But once we emerged from the strike and were finally able to write ‘Brave New World’, and everyone else could start writing their movies too, then we could begin to have a meaningful discussion about future developments and the suitable post-credits scene to hint at.” Thus, that’s how it gradually took shape.

In an earlier part of the chat, director Onah shared the rationale behind having a solitary post-credit scene in contrast to numerous others seen in Marvel films. He emphasized, “This segment serves to establish Sam as our freshly minted Captain America.

The primary theme of this film was clearly defined and central. Adding numerous post-credit scenes seemed like it might deviate from this focus. Even the hint we see remains heavily centered around the character of Sam.

Captain America: Brave New World is out now in cinemas.
