Doctor Who star Colin Baker has given his opinion on a recent surprising development in the show. Following Ncuti Gatwa’s Doctor transforming into Billie Piper – who famously played the companion Rose alongside the Ninth and Tenth Doctors – in the final episode of season 15, Baker explained what he thought of Piper’s brief appearance.
Believing it was likely untrue, Baker-who famously played the sixth Doctor-shared with the Oxford Mail that while he doesn’t understand what happened, he thinks Piper’s role was always intended to be flexible and not necessarily permanent.
“I think they didn’t know what to say, so they did that. I think there will be something involving Billie Piper, but she’s not the Doctor, who can she be?” Baker said. “She’s someone else! It’s like me being the Master. Well, I could be, I suppose.”

He admitted she might be a doppelganger, but explained, “They can create any storyline they want, and that’s what makes the series so fun.” He added, “The possibilities are endless, so if the writers decide to go in that direction, they certainly can.”
When asked who he’d like to cast in the role, Baker responded: “I think it would be great to have someone new and unexpected. I’d choose my daughter, Rosie; she’d do a very good job.”

Baker isn’t alone in questioning things; other Doctor Who figures have similar concerns. In a conversation with RadioTimes.com, Steven Moffat, who previously led the show, discussed Piper’s involvement. He explained, “I truly don’t know anything specific, but it seems they’re covering all their bases,”
“They’ve not said [she’s the Doctor], so I don’t know. I don’t even know if they know!”
Although the Doctor Who finale was broadcast in May, fans haven’t received any updates lately. Because Disney hasn’t officially confirmed whether they’ll continue their partnership with the BBC, it’s unclear when or how the sci-fi show will come back with new episodes.

For now, Piper hasn’t said much about her guest appearance. While at Florida Supercon in July, she mentioned that being on the show came together very quickly and was a last-minute decision.
This situation is really tricky, and I need to be careful about how I respond,” she explained to the audience (via Deadline). “All I can say is that I was asked to participate quite suddenly, and I can’t reveal the details of my involvement. However, I found the filming process very moving, and I believe it provides a wonderful conclusion.”
Doctor Who is broadcast on BBC One in the United Kingdom and Disney+ internationally. You can find older Doctor Who episodes on BBC iPlayer within the UK.
