Why Beyond Paradise’s fan-hated character may actually be redeemable
In the series “Beyond Paradise,” Archie (Jamie Bamber) has been facing a tough time lately, not due to this week’s mountainous journey, but because of his failed attempts to capture Esther’s (Zahra Ahmadi) heart. These misfired advances have left him quite puzzled.
During an exclusive conversation with Digital Spy, Sally Bretton remarked that Archie is extremely charismatic and accustomed to his charm being effective.
Esther isn’t easily swayed with emotions, and neither are many fans of the series “Beyond Paradise”. For a while now, they’ve harbored a strong dislike towards Bamber’s character, which he himself acknowledged, and this feeling persists.

Another added the sentiment: “Don’t want to see Esther hooked up with him.”
This season, three episodes featuring Archie have sparked intense reactions among viewers, given his unconventional methods of flirting. For instance, he’s been known to say things like “come on Grandma,” and “I heard that women of a certain age prefer to stay in their comfort zone.
Though viewers might have strong reservations towards the bachelor of Shipton Abbott, this latest episode hinted that there could potentially be room for improvement in his character.
While on their date with Esther, Archie decided to set aside his charming, sophisticated persona and instead opened up to her in a more vulnerable way.
Initially, he shared details of his parents’ divorce and its impact on him during childhood. To this, she replied, “I can relate,” unexpectedly disclosing more about her own experiences than she typically does.
Later on, I admitted that my intention was not just to boost my own self-esteem, but genuinely to win her approval. It wasn’t about vain glory, it was about the deep regard I hold for her opinion of me.
Through this development, Archie becomes slightly more endearing as viewers get a glimpse of what lies beneath the polished facade they’re familiar with thus far. However, it shines most in the impact that his genuine nature has on beloved character, Esther.
Esther appears to be blossoming personally, given the brief encounters thus far with this man. Although she remains cautious towards him, there seems to be an emerging romance that is revealing a newfound brightness in her, which had previously been obscured by any pain or past events she’s experienced.
In this budding connection, Esther is gradually showing more transparency, exposing her tender emotions, and developing a sense of optimism. Despite being steadfast and robust – as a diligent detective and an unwavering mother – Esther has confessed that she seldom takes time for herself.
As a gamer, I’d say it seems like Sally from Bretton is the one Esther is closest to, outside of her gaming squad, based on my little sister Zoe’s curiosity about her friendships.
It’s enjoyable to watch the supporting characters in “Beyond Paradise” develop beyond their initial appearances, and it appears that we’ll have a chance to delve deeper into Esther’s character as well.
Ahmad playfully hinted to Digital Spy that Esther might find this fresh journey difficult, as she mentioned her character would grapple with the intricacies of dating beyond one’s twenties, especially while being a parent.
Although you’re a parent to an older child, it’s important to remember that balancing your responsibilities with personal time for enjoyment is crucial. You owe it to both them and yourself to live a fulfilling life.
Esther’s character is set for a thrilling voyage, and this adventure is made possible by the creative work of Archie.
And hey, if he’s able to pass over Esther’s high bar there must be something redeemable about him.
Beyond Paradise and Death in Paradise both air on BBC One and stream on BBC iPlayer.
