In Season 5 of The Boys, Ashley Barrett is struggling with her newly acquired powers, but these powers could be key to her development as a character. After injecting herself with Compound V at the end of Season 4 to avoid being eliminated by The Seven, it’s natural she’s upset with the results. Ashley has often wanted to escape Vought International, but lacked the courage, even when others offered support. Her cautious approach has kept her alive so far, but her new abilities will force her to confront her own morals and decide how far she’s willing to go.
The Boys creator explains the importance of Ashley Barrett’s new powers
Okay, so I was reading an interview with Eric Kripke, the guy behind The Boys, and he explained Ashley Barrett’s whole mind-reading/head-face thing. Apparently, it’s not just a random power-up; it’s actually tied to all the stress she’s been under at Vought. Her hair started falling out because of it, and then Compound V just… twisted that stress into this face growing on the back of her head. Kripke says it’s like her conscience, or an angel on her shoulder, constantly influencing her.
Kripke shared in an interview with TV Insider that the character actually has a name: Back Ashley, though the cast and crew often shorten it to ‘Bashley.’ He explained that he loves this power because, beyond being strange and humorous, the most effective superpowers often represent the character’s internal struggles.
Although Ashley has occasionally shown a glimmer of morality throughout the series, she’s consistently backed down from doing the right thing due to fear of consequences. Becoming a Supe herself, despite her relatively weak mind-reading abilities compared to others like Cate Dunlap, has protected her from being eliminated and allowed her to rise to the position of Vice President by season five. However, despite her climb up the corporate ladder and displays of ruthlessness, she remains largely a follower, carrying out the orders of The Seven.
As a movie fan, I found the creator’s explanation of this character dynamic really interesting. It sounds like the character is battling with her own internal struggles, and they wanted to literally give that inner conflict a voice. They created this other character, Bashley, as this really good person, almost like the ‘old’ version of the main character, who’s constantly trying to steer her towards making the right choices. The big question, though, is whether she’ll ever actually listen to that voice of reason – that part of herself – or if she’s going to keep making decisions that go against her own values.
Leaving The Seven comes with serious risks, as we’ve clearly seen. Although we don’t see how Ashley reacted, the death of A-Train in the fifth season’s first episode demonstrates what happens when Homelander considers someone a traitor. They previously had an agreement where both would be ruined if one of them fell from grace, and A-Train even tried to get Ashley to leave Vought, but she refused. Given A-Train’s fate, it’s understandable why Ashley often ignores Bashley’s advice.
Considering Butcher’s recent changes and Ashley’s emerging second face – which seems to have a will of its own – she could unexpectedly switch sides, possibly even joining the heroes. Based on past events, this would likely involve a significant sacrifice on her part, similar to what happened with Victoria Neuman. However, her relatively weak powers could actually help her stay hidden, maybe even from Sister Sage. Of all the people at Vought, Ashley is surprisingly well-positioned to secretly betray The Seven when the moment is right.
