Amazon is developing a TV series, but early signs suggest it’s facing major problems and may not live up to expectations before it even premieres. Fans who were excited about seeing their favorite games adapted for television are understandably disappointed by the current state of the production.
Amazon seems to have all the resources necessary to successfully adapt the Mass Effect series into a video game. However, recent reports suggest the project is delayed because Amazon is requesting script revisions to broaden its appeal beyond existing fans of the game.
Mass Effect’s Delay Is Due to Script Issues
Eurogamer reports that Amazon wants the scripts for the Mass Effect TV series revised to attract a wider audience, including people who don’t typically play video games. The bigger concern isn’t just the time it will take to rewrite the scripts, but why Amazon is asking for these changes. It seems the writers are now being asked to prioritize appealing to viewers unfamiliar with the Mass Effect games.
It’s a common problem with adaptations – TV shows or movies – that creators try too hard to appeal to everyone. This often leads to a result that doesn’t fully satisfy either the original fans or a broader audience, as seen with the Borderlands movie.
Video game adaptations primarily aim to please existing fans of the game. Successful adaptations like The Last of Us and Fallout have proven that staying true to the original source material – even while adding unique story elements – works well. Given this success, it seems less logical to focus on attracting viewers who haven’t played the game.
Mass Effect Will Naturally Appeal to Sci-Fi Fans Regardless of Gaming Status
Players of the Mass Effect trilogy will tell you it’s a compelling science fiction story. It’s essentially a space opera with characters and a world that are as engaging as any great TV series. A well-made television adaptation could easily attract viewers who don’t even play video games.
The game Mass Effect centers around Commander Shepard, who becomes the first human to join the Spectres – an elite galactic force. Shepard discovers an artifact displaying unsettling visions, and begins to suspect another Spectre, who is widely admired due to humanity’s relatively new status in the galaxy. This makes it harder for Shepard to be taken seriously.
This sets up a thrilling chase for Commander Shepard to stop a dangerous rogue agent before he launches an invasion. To succeed, Shepard needs to team up with skilled experts. The game appeals to both story lovers and gamers alike, as its heart lies in unraveling a central mystery, experiencing a grand adventure, and forging strong relationships with the crew aboard Shepard’s ship.
Considering all of this, the decision to significantly change the story to attract viewers who haven’t played the games is particularly frustrating. The original Mass Effect story is already compelling, and a good adaptation should appeal to everyone. However, the show’s future looks uncertain, because straying too far from the source material could doom the series before it even begins.
