Why Alexander Skarsgård Joined Apple’s ‘Murderbot’ Despite His Sci-Fi Success
The new sci-fi action comedy series on Apple TV+, titled “Murderbot,” is causing quite a stir due to its impressive early reviews, which describe it as nothing less than outstanding. With a perfect 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, this production boasts Alexander Skarsgård in his inaugural major science fiction role, a genre with which he has previous experience. Despite being new to this specific character, Skarsgård was reportedly attracted to the role because of the unique charm of Murderbot’s protagonist.
As a lifelong fan of science fiction, I couldn’t resist the opportunity to dive into the world of ‘Murderbot’ on Apple TV+. Having grown up captivated by tales of androids and artificial intelligence, I’ve been eagerly waiting for the perfect role to embody this fascination. When the offer for Murderbot came my way, I knew it was the right project to bring my childhood dreams to life.
As someone born in the 80s, I spent my childhood captivated by Star Wars. The idea of being involved in a science fiction project has always been a dream of mine, and I’ve patiently waited for the right opportunity to come along. Over time, I’ve encountered several projects that didn’t quite resonate with me, but this one feels just right.
Previously involved in science fiction through productions such as “Battleship” and “Infinity Pool”, Skarsgård is now leading the cast for all 10 episodes of “Murderbot”. This role required a significant investment, but Skarsgård felt it was necessary due to the unique nature of the main character. He expressed that this character offered a refreshing alternative in a world oversaturated with mediocrity.
The tone of it captivated me. It was unique, offbeat, and surprising – nothing like the typical or imitative roles. I found myself drawn to this character because it seemed fresh and original, unlike anything I had encountered before in stories or performances.
Alexander Skarsgård Calls ‘Murderbot’ a “Socially Awkward Android”
When you come across the term Murderbot, images of something sleek and impressive, akin to Robocop, might spring to mind. However, it’s not typically associated with a being that prefers spending its time watching futuristic soap operas over performing its tasks as Skarsgård explains, “We aimed for a contrast and a juxtaposition between the character’s name and its appearance.” He further elaborates, “The design of the character is meant to be in stark contrast with the laid-back nature of the character.
We desired a formidable name akin to Murderbot, one that suggests physical dominance, but the amusing twist is in reality. It’s not a hardened combat machine filled with testosterone as its appearance might suggest. Instead, it’s an extremely socially awkward robot who prefers solitude over interaction and enjoys watching Sanctuary Moon.
According to what critics are saying, the results so far have been truly astounding. As Ryan Britt from Inverse puts it, this is something completely novel. You can catch the first two episodes of Murderbot when they premiere on Apple TV+ on May 16. The following eight episodes will air every Friday until its finale on July 11.
