Why Abbott Elementary’s Underrated Characters Deserve the Spotlight in Season 5!
Despite the fact that season 4 of Abbott Elementary seemed to underutilize one of its key supporting actors, there’s no doubt they can still dazzle in season 5. The characters in Abbott Elementary are all side-splittingly funny, but the amount of screen time and story emphasis each character receives varies from season to season. For instance, seasons 2 and 3 primarily focused on the romantic entanglements between Janine and Gregory, while season 1 delved deeply into Barbara’s mentorship role and her personal struggles with that position. As a devoted fan, I can’t wait to see how each character shines in season 5!
In a similar vein, while the final episode of Abbott Elementary ‘s fourth season had a focus on the students, the entire season served as a journey of redemption for Principal Ava Coleman. Initially appearing as a corrupt and arrogant figure in season 1, Ava managed to maintain those doubtful traits while also emerging as a surprising advocate with strong dedication to her role as principal and educator in season 4. Consequently, some other key characters found themselves receiving less attention during this period when Ava was the main focus.
Melissa’s Abbott Elementary Season 4 Role Was Minimal
Abbott Elementary Focused On Ava and Barbara Over Melissa
In Abbott Elementary’s fourth season, Melissa and her roommate Jacob took a backseat in the storylines as the show chose to highlight more intriguing narratives instead, given that their situations weren’t particularly eventful. However, one episode bucked this trend and turned out to be one of the standout episodes of the season. Initially, when Jacob and Melissa shared a residence, their lives were so dynamic that the series found it hard to ignore them.
In an unexpected turn of events in the third season premiere of Abbott Elementary, Melissa declined Gary the Vending Machine Guy’s public proposal, while Jacob and his long-term partner Zack parted ways a few episodes onward. Consequently, they became key figures as they navigated their respective breakups during this season. However, as the story of Janine and Gregory took precedence, Melissa and Gary gradually faded into the sidelines, barely making an appearance since then.
In comparison to Ava’s character development, Janine and Gregory’s romantic progression, and even Melissa’s role, Jacob had several chances to stand out during season 4. He endeavored to help the downtrodden student RJ emerge from his shell, bravely dealt with the school’s tapeworm outbreak, and showed he was still dealing with his ex by singing a humorous version of Papa Roach’s “Last Resort” at karaoke. However, Melissa barely appeared on screen during season 4.
Melissa and Captain Robinson’s Abbott Elementary Season 4 Romance Was Unexpectedly Sweet
Guest Star Mike O’Malley Made A Big Impression With Little Screen Time
It’s great that Melissa made good use of her limited screen time. Her amusing bond with her emotional support guinea pig Sweetcheeks and heartwarming romance with Mike O’Malley’s character, Captain Robinson, stood out, especially after her difficult breakup with Gary. In the series Abbott Elementary, Ava’s love interest, O’Shon, was a fantastic addition as the best new character, but Captain Robinson, even with his reduced screen time in season 4, left an impact on viewers.
Abbott Elementary Actor | Character Name |
---|---|
Quinta Brunson | Janine Teagues |
Tyler James Williams | Gregory Eddie |
Lisa Ann Walter | Melissa Schemmenti |
Sheryl Lee Ralph | Barbara Howard |
Janelle James | Principal Ava |
William Stanford Davis | Mr. Johnson |
Chris Perfetti | Jacob Hill |
In Season 4, episode 16 titled “Books,” one of the more bold adventures, delved into the contemporary issue of book bans in American schools. This served as a backdrop for Melissa’s subplot involving Captain Robinson, where she attempted to convince herself that she wasn’t affected by Gary’s upcoming wedding. This secondary storyline provided an amusing and breezy contrast to the show’s more biting satirical narrative. However, what stood out in Abbott Elementary season 4 was the surprising sweetness of Melissa and Captain Robinson’s romance, underscoring the rich potential the characters hold as the series moves forward.
One Standout Abbott Elementary Season 4 Episode Proved Melissa and Jacob’s Potential
Melissa’s Christmas Party Was Central To A Great Festive Special
In the “Winter Break” episode of season 4, it became apparent just how much Melissa and Jacob’s friendship had blossomed over time. This was particularly evident when Melissa hosted her family’s crucial Christmas Eve dinner and relied on Jacob to assist in making everything run smoothly. However, their bond was tested when Melissa’s prejudiced uncle appeared to have passed away upstairs, leading to a discussion between Melissa, Jacob, and his brother about how they could conceal the situation until the meal had concluded.
Melissa’s episode titled ‘Winter Break’ was one of her finest performances, and Jacob played a significant role in its success. The whimsical plot thrived on its outrageousness and bleak undertones. While Ava’s show ‘Abbott Elementary’ demonstrated during season 4 that it can tackle serious storylines for its characters, ‘Winter Break’ was an example of slapstick comedy at its best, making it the best holiday special the sitcom has produced so far. Therefore, future seasons should explore this dynamic between Melissa and Jacob more frequently, giving them ample chances to bounce off each other’s contrasting personalities.
Where Melissa’s Story Can Go In Abbott Elementary Season 5
Melissa and Captain Robinson Could Soon Move In Together
Interestingly, the most effective way for Melissa and Captain Robinson’s plot progression in Abbott Elementary season 5 could be for a third party to come into the picture, creating a bit of tension between them as friends. However, an intriguing alternative might be for Melissa and Captain Robinson to share living quarters, forcing Jacob to find a new place to live. This arrangement would not only add complexity to their friendship but also offer more opportunities for another underdeveloped character, which could help give shape and direction to Jacob’s storyline that was seemingly missing in season 4. Despite Jacob having received more screen time than Melissa in the previous season, his character arc seemed less defined compared to hers.
In the show Abbott Elementary, Janine and Gregory might feel inspired by their colleague’s bold move and contemplate taking a similar step in their relationship, thereby escalating the romantic tension between them. On the other hand, Melissa could tackle her apprehension about commitment that led to her breakup with Gary by initiating a conversation with Captain Robinson about moving in together. Notably, Mike O’Malley’s guest character waited for Melissa to propose becoming exclusive, thereby avoiding any potential scare tactics.
In the fourth season of Abbott Elementary, it was clear that the show’s romantic relationships could weather some turbulence and often led to growth for the characters involved. This suggests that Captain Robinson and Melissa’s storyline in season 5 won’t be without its challenges, but it should not take a backseat to the overall comedy. Melissa has deserved more attention, and her increased focus is likely to enhance Jacob’s role within the series as well. Consequently, Abbott Elementary season 5 should give Melissa more opportunities to shine.
