Fans following news about A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms might have wondered why there are no dragons featured, considering their prominence in House of the Dragon. This new show will adapt the first story in George R.R. Martin’s Tales of Dunk and Egg series.
Fans have noticed something missing from the trailers and photos for the new show: dragons. While Game of Thrones featured Daenerys’ dragons and House of the Dragon had many, the new series, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, appears to only include a single, paper-made dragon – and book readers believe that’s all there will be.
The Last Targaryen Dragon Died 56 Years Before A Knight Of The Seven Kingdoms

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms takes place in the year 209 AC – which means 209 years after Aegon Targaryen’s conquest of Westeros. Aegon’s arrival marked the beginning of the Targaryen dynasty and the setting for the entire series created by George R.R. Martin. His conquest was largely achieved through the power of his three dragons, and they continued to influence Westeros for many years after.
As seen in Game of Thrones, dragons eventually disappeared, becoming only a myth. In A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, it’s been 56 years since a dragon last lived. Following the events of House of the Dragon and the loss of so many dragons, their numbers dwindled, with fewer and fewer successfully hatching.
By the year 153 AC, dragons were being born weak and unhealthy, and most died within days of hatching. The Targaryens still had some dragon eggs, but they were cold and lifeless, similar to the ones seen in Game of Thrones. In A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, dragons are mostly just a fading legend, though people haven’t entirely forgotten how powerful they once were.
The Targaryens’ Power Is Waning During The Events Of A Knight Of The Seven Kingdoms

As a total film and TV buff, I’ve always been fascinated by how stories get told – especially historical ones. If you listened to a Targaryen historian recounting their family’s rise to power in Westeros, they’d probably focus on things like Aegon’s political savvy, the unwavering loyalty of his followers, and brilliant military planning. But honestly? The real secret to their success wasn’t clever tactics or inspiring leadership – it was having dragons. Seriously, huge, fire-breathing dragons. That’s what won them the whole game.
The Targaryens’ power came solely from their dragons. Without them, they were just another noble family, though still a very influential one. By the time of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, people were beginning to forget about the dragons, and other lords were starting to realize the Targaryens weren’t as invincible as they once seemed.
Okay, so by the time we get to the later parts of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, the Targaryens have really dug in. They’ve built up a solid base of power and allies the old-fashioned way – through strength and negotiation – and honestly, it’s going to take a lot to knock them off their perch. I’m talking another seventy-five years of Targaryen rule, at least. And when they do eventually make their comeback with Daenerys? You guessed it – dragons are the key. It feels a little predictable, but hey, it’s Westeros!
