Who's Who in Wicked: A last-minute guide

As a seasoned gamer of musicals and fantasy tales, I’ve seen my fair share of magical journeys and wicked witches. But let me tell you, folks, nothing has quite prepared me for the impending adventure that is “Wicked“!

The much-anticipated premiere of “Wicked” is just around the corner! Following months filled with sneak peeks, behind-the-scenes clips, interviews, and merchandise collaborations, we’re now left with only a few hours until this magical tale graces our screens. For those who might need a quick introduction or reminder before settling in at Shiz University or spending a day in the Emerald City, here’s a brief overview of the key characters in the backstory of Oz’s witches.

Two witches and The Wizard

In “The Wizard of Oz”, the character Dorothy first encounters Glinda, the Good Witch of the North in the enchanting realm of Oz. At the start of this musical adaptation, Glinda goes by Galinda and is a self-assured apprentice witch with high expectations. She anticipates exclusive mentorship from the headmistress and a luxurious single room in her college dorm. However, as Part 1 concludes, Galinda undergoes significant personal growth but expresses discontent at having to share a room with a new roommate. Ariana Grande portrays Glinda in this production, earning recognition for her acting skills and music awards.

In the magical world I inhabit, my roommate, the brilliant yet troublesome Glinda, often finds herself at odds with me, Elphaba – the girl with emerald skin. Now, don’t get me wrong, I’m no ordinary student; the Good Witch herself dubs me phosphorescent.

In this particular segment, we encounter the legendary and magnificent character, The Wizard, portrayed by veteran actor and musician Jeff Goldblum. Many yearn for an audience with this enigmatic figure, admiring his exceptional traits. However, as Elphaba discovers, he wields power as a kingmaker rather than ruling as a king himself, and his motives are not always in sync with her beliefs. This discrepancy plays a significant role in the climax of Act 1 and serves as a catalyst for Act 2. For now, let’s focus on the events unfolding at hand.

The Educators

Madame Morrible is almost as important to the story as the wizard himself as the headmistress of Shiz University. She fawns over the powerful, but dismisses people who try to pander to her. One of the main characters only joins her elite seminar on the recommendation of someone truly special. We’ve seen Michelle Yeoh be forceful and discerning as Eleanor in Crazy Rich Asians in this will translate well to her portrayal of Morrible.

In the series, Peter Dinklage, famously known for his role in Game of Thrones, assumes an unrecognizable character – Doctor Dillamond, a wise goat professor in Oz. He tirelessly educates his students about the hardships faced by his kind and speaks out against their oppression. However, his words fall on deaf ears as one student leaves a harsh message for him, “Animals should be seen and not heard.” Doctor Dillamond is supportive of Elphaba, while Glinda becomes frustrated with his inability to correctly pronounce her name (which she prefers to be called Galinda).

The Overlooked

Jonathan Bailey, who previously portrayed a brooding and somber viscount in “Bridgerton”, takes on the role of Fiyero, a carefree and lazy character who comes to Shiz seeking a good time. His easygoing demeanor captures Glinda’s heart, while he connects with Elphaba over a young lion cub kept in a cage. With an engaging storyline that promises excitement, we can look forward to unraveling Fiyero’s tale in the upcoming movie.

As the sister of Elphaba, I’m Nessarose – the one whose tale is heartbreakingly intertwined with the infamous house landing incident from “The Wizard of Oz.” Currently, I’m known as “the girl in the chair,” often admired due to my connections but frequently overlooked. However, everything changes when Glinda steps in and turns me into a sympathetic figure for the Munchkins. Marissa Bode, who shares my wheelchair journey, brings me to life on stage. We eagerly anticipate the moment when I slip into the jeweled shoes that my father gifts me as a farewell present.

At the end of this small circle of friends comes Boq, who initially becomes close to Nessa at Glinda’s suggestion. However, he develops genuine affection for her over time. It’s important to mention that finding him a girlfriend as a diversion doesn’t alleviate his feelings towards Glinda. Notably, Ethan Slater, widely recognized for his role as Spongebob Squarepants on Broadway, is set to deliver an impressive performance in this role.

Happy opening weekend to Wicked and we expect great things from you!
