Who's really the 'puppet'? Jimmy Kimmel returns Elon Musk's 'propaganda' shade

As a long-time fan who has watched Jimmy Kimmel‘s late-night show for years, I must admit that his quick wit and ability to address pressing political issues with humor always leaves me in stitches. His latest spat with Elon Musk is no exception. While I may not always agree with every stance he takes, his unwavering commitment to speaking truth to power, especially during these tumultuous times, is commendable.

Jimmy Kimmel, who was recently labeled as an “annoying, nonsensical mouthpiece” by Elon Musk, has retorted to the Tesla CEO. He implied that one must understand someone to be able to criticize them in this way.

On Thursday, the late-night Emmy winner playfully retaliated against Musk’s social media jabs by making light of him during his opening monologue. In essence, he jokingly suggested that “the individual who reportedly paid millions daily to influence votes for Donald Trump is now accusing me of being a manipulated messenger.

Kimmel criticized Musk by saying, “Hey Kermit, you purchased Twitter,” implying that he believes Musk bought a platform that primarily functions as a tool for spreading propaganda.

In a statement made on Thursday, Musk, who purchased the social media platform last year for $44 million, criticized Jimmy Kimmel as a “mouthpiece for propaganda” following his popular post-election monologue. Echoing similar sentiments, he also recently denounced music and entertainment celebrities for endorsing Kamala Harris just before the election.

On Wednesday, Kimmel expressed deep emotions during his speech, becoming visibly upset as he lamented the outcome of the presidential election and raised worries about what four more years with former president Trump might bring. This time, Trump managed to outperform Vice President Kamala Harris, securing another term in office.

“It was a terrible night for women, for children, for the hundreds of thousands of hard-working immigrants who make this country go, for health care, for our climate, for science, for journalism, for justice, for free speech,” Kimmel said in his first post-election show. “It was a terrible night for poor people, for the middle class, for seniors who rely on Social Security, for our allies in Ukraine, for NATO and the truth and democracy and decency. And it was a terrible night for everyone who voted against him. And guess what? It was a bad night for everyone who voted for him too. You just don’t realize it yet.”

Jimmy Kimmel has consistently spoken out against Trump, using his late-night platform not only for humor about the president-elect, but also to discuss how Trump’s policies have personally affected him. In 2020, he encouraged viewers to be aware of the Republican Party’s intentions to revoke the Affordable Care Act, as this would particularly harm individuals with pre-existing conditions, such as his own son Billy who has a congenital heart condition. On Thursday, Kimmel described the current political atmosphere as standing idly in the road, awaiting a bus crash that is still 40 miles away.

In his opening speech, Kimmel criticized Musk for past tweets labeling media organizations like the Washington Post, New York Times, and Associated Press as propaganda factories. Kimmel jokingly pointed out that Musk referred to AP as “Associated Propaganda”. Additionally, Kimmel made fun of Musk’s allegiance to Trump, referencing a 2022 Truth Social post suggesting that Musk was eager for government subsidies.

Two years ago, Trump wrote that if he had said something like ‘get down on your knees and plead,’ he believes the person would have complied.

On last night’s show, Kimmel didn’t just focus on Elon Musk’s rapport with Trump. He also targeted Musk’s personal life, particularly his family dynamics. Musk has fathered twelve children from various relationships and his daughter, Vivian Jenna Wilson (who is transgender), has publicly criticized him several times. Most recently, she posted a message on Thursday stating that her father is “a delusional, immature, and controlling individual who has failed to grow up over the past 38 years.

“At least my children like me,” Kimmel also said Thursday.
