Who will play young Haymitch? New Hunger Games movie has yet to cast the iconic role
A potential adaptation for a prequel titled “Sunshine on the Reaping“, which serves as a prelude to “The Hunger Games“, is being considered; however, the production team has not found a suitable young actor to play the character of Haymitch yet.
The recently published book by Suzanne Collins, titled “Haymitch Abernathy’s Story,” focuses on the events of the 50th Hunger Games, detailing Haymitch’s transformative journey that leads to his alliance with Katniss Everdeen.
After the modest triumph of “The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes,” a prequel focusing on Coriolanus Snow’s early life, it was revealed that a film adaptation of “Sunshine on the Reaping” is being planned. However, the actor or actress who will play the main character has not been selected yet.

After the book’s release, film producer Nina Jacobson discussed the upcoming adaptation with Variety, revealing that they seek an actor capable of delivering more than just a replica of Woody Harrelson’s portrayal from the initial series.
Jacobson commented, “This is quite intriguing, as the unpublished early script has left us in a dilemma. We’ve been hesitant to cast actors due to the risk of lines being leaked. It’s been tense waiting for this.
In that position, we’re seeking an individual who isn’t trying to imitate Woody entirely, but rather someone who convincingly embodies a younger version of the character, prior to the hardships and emotional turmoil brought about by the aftermath of the games.
There’s no one quite like Woody Harrelson, and that’s because he is unique in his own way. To portray him effectively, you should tap into the mischievousness that defines him, and consider who he was before the character he played at the start of The Hunger Games. Try to understand what led him to become the person we see later.
Jacobson, responsible for creating every film in the series, went on to call the part an “excellent opportunity.” He further explained, “It’s quite uncommon for a franchise to offer an actor a platform to truly demonstrate their talent and versatility.
However, it’s worth noting that these roles are exceptionally well-played. We’ve been fortunate to have top-tier actors for our parts. They’re drawn to these roles because of the depth in Collins’ characters and the powerful ideas they convey. This franchise continues to be grounded in profound character development and intense emotional trauma.
Under the Radiance of Dawn at the Harvesting, a fresh Hunger Games prequel film titled “The Ballad of Sunrise and Reaping” will debut in theaters on November 20, 2026. The book bearing the same name can be found and purchased here.
(Note: The original title has been changed to better reflect the narrative flow and tone.)
