Viewers of the recent finale of The Great British Bake Off might have noticed a touching tribute. The end credits included a message, ‘In Loving Memory of Dan Blackman 1974 to 2025’.
But who is Dan Blackman and what was his connection to the beloved baking competition on Channel 4?
Dan, who sadly died this summer at the age of 51, played a key role in the success of The Great British Bake Off as an editor for five years. With a 20-year career in television, he joined the GBBO team in 2018 and worked on the show until 2023.

He relocated to the Bristol area and earned a History and Politics degree from the University of the West of England. He spent 13 years working at the BBC before becoming a freelancer in 2011.
He’s worked as an editor on many popular TV shows, including Bargain Hunt, Changing Rooms, George Clarke’s Amazing Spaces, and Springwatch.
It was really sad to hear about Dan. He’d moved to the Bristol area, but stayed close to his family back in Cheshire. We had two services for him – his funeral was up in Adlington Memorial Park near Macclesfield, and then those of us who knew him through work and as friends got together in Bristol to remember him. It was a tough time, trying to split things up like that, but it felt right to honor him both where he grew up and where he was living.
A former coworker shared their condolences in a comment, writing, ‘I was so saddened to hear this news. It’s been many years since we worked together, but I always remembered Dan as a truly kind and wonderful person. Rest in peace.’
Another friend said: ‘Such a sad gathering but shows how well he was loved !’
