Who Really Robbed The White Lotus? Uncovering Three Shocking Theories!

In the opening scenes of the third season’s second episode of “The White Lotus,” a key element known as Chekhov’s gun makes its appearance. Just like every season, this one started with a premonition of death that would cast a shadow throughout the storyline. This time, we only hear gunshots in the distance and see a corpse floating in the water, without knowing who met their fate. However, fans can’t resist speculating about the possible victim.

In Episode 2, we’re introduced to a gun (not necessarily the main one), wielded by a masked robber who’s robbing the jewelry store within the luxury hotel. Meanwhile, the Russian health consultant Valentin (Arnas Fedaravičius) pulls over near the entrance barrier of the White Lotus, engaging in conversation with security guard Gaitok (Tayme Thapthimthong). As they chat, a car carrying at least two individuals forces its way through the entrance. Gaitok tries to halt them, but Valentin diverts his attention.

A masked individual steps out of a vehicle, wearing sunglasses and a hood, strides through the hotel lobby towards the shop. He brandishes a firearm, putting Chelsea (Aimee Lou Wood) and another employee in a tense situation. Meanwhile, Chloe (Charlotte Le Bon) is in the fitting room throughout this ordeal. The robber shatters several display cases, stuffing stolen jewelry into his bag, before fleeing back to his car.

Once more, the car halts at the barricade arm, causing the masked individual to attempt lifting it. In response, Gaitok rushes out to prevent him. Meanwhile, a second figure exits the car without revealing their face, and it’s unknown if Gaitok catches sight of this mysterious driver. The initial masked attacker strikes Gaitok on the head with the gun and scurries back to the vehicle. The car swiftly departs from the scene.

Later, Gaitok secretly listens in as Timothy (Jason Isaacs) passionately discusses with an old acquaintance if there’s been any involvement in a money laundering and bribery scandal. The scene focuses on Gaitok’s expression, leaving one to wonder whether he believes this conversation pertains to the robbery or if he’s gathering potentially useful intel for later.

Could it be possible that the firearm seen in this episode could reappear later in the season? It’s plausible, but on “The White Lotus,” anything can happen. Mike White dislikes a predictable narrative, and Chekhov’s gun is a classic example of such tropes. So, let’s indulge in some speculation about the heist scene and the participants, using hints from the episode as our guide.

Theory 1: Valentin is involved with the robbery

It appears that Valentin might be the prime suspect in this robbery, given his suspicious actions. As he leaves the White Lotus hotel on his motorcycle, he deliberately stops it near the security barrier next to Gaitok’s station, creating a gap for a car to pass through. When the car swiftly moves past and Gaitok shows signs of worry, Valentin quickly shifts Gaitok’s focus by proposing tickets to an upcoming fight, which seems suspiciously timed.

Previously, there have been indications of an internal theft attempt at White Lotus establishments, such as the instance when Paula encouraged Kai, a native Hawaiian, to pilfer jewelry from the Mossbacher family’s room in Season 1. It is plausible that Valentin or another staff member may have provided information about accessing the hotel shop to the robbers in this case.

Theory 2: Chloe is involved with the robbery

During the robbery, Chloe sneakily ducks into the changing room for the whole duration, as if she had some inkling it would happen. It’s suspected that her boyfriend, Greg/Gary (Jon Gries), a known liar, might have orchestrated his wife’s murder to claim her substantial wealth. At dinner with Chelsea, Rick (Walton Goggins), and Greg/Gary, Chloe swiftly dismisses Chelsea’s statement about nearly dying, implying it was untrue. However, given the circumstances, it’s not far-fetched to think she could have been in danger. That is, unless Chloe knew that Chelsea was never truly in peril.

It’s likely that Gary or Greg is working with Chloe, as they are being deliberately secretive about how they became acquainted, a fact that Rick brings up to Chelsea at a later time. Despite Rick’s faults—which we’ve seen include moodiness, disregard, and outright rudeness in only two episodes—he appears to be the kind of con artist who can easily detect another one. Given that Gary or Greg has already shown signs of being shady, it’s not far-fetched to assume that Chloe could have encountered him through criminal connections.

It’s likely that Gary/Greg received Tanya McQuoid’s wealth following her death from falling off a boat, but it’s also plausible that the authorities are examining him in relation to her demise due to suspicions of his involvement. Keeping this in mind, Tanya’s assistant Portia (Haley Lu Richardson) might have reported her boss’s suspicious husband to the police if she had the courage to take such action.

Theory 3: Rick is involved with the robbery

Rick appeared unusually hasty in rejecting the idea that Chelsea might have perished, which could be attributed to his habitual gruff and dismissive attitude. However, it’s plausible that this was the first sincere emotion displayed by Rick, despite his performance-like hug following the incident.

In the end, it appears Rick may have a larger plan unfolding: Tracking down the hotel owner, Mr. Jim Hollinger. There seems to be an unusual level of curiosity about this man’s location, as he mentioned to Chelsea that he will spend some time in Bangkok, where Mr. Hollinger resides.

Bonus theory: The robber threw the gun into the forest, and it will be picked up by a monkey

Okay, hear me out.

The deaths in ‘White Lotus’ often occur unexpectedly and accidentally. For instance, Shane (played by Jake Lacey), who can be quite reckless, ends up stabbing Armond (Murray Bartlett), the hotel manager, when Armond secretly enters Shane’s room to defecate in his suitcase. Later, Tanya (a character whose name wasn’t provided) survives an attempted murder on a yacht, exclaiming “These gays are trying to kill me!”, but tragically dies after falling off the boat following a head injury.

A speculation has been circulating online that a monkey could somehow obtain a firearm and start firing it towards the end of this season. While it may seem far-fetched, given the hotel staff’s frequent warnings to guests about the monkeys (and the potentially dangerous fruit), the show has been peppered with foreboding scenes featuring primate statues, adding fuel to this intriguing theory.

In my perspective, as a follower, I’m pondering: How might a monkey come across a firearm? It could be that the gun was left behind when some miscreants were hastily leaving the White Lotus estate. This entire plot twist, introducing a weapon to a woodland dweller, seems unusual, yet it could be an intriguing way for Mike White to conclude a character’s storyline, no? A bit far-fetched? Absolutely. But can you imagine a more unique and Mike White-esque method of character demise?
